Accelerating EV charging infrastructure for mobility hubs
Electric car charging in street

Project summary

The SurplusMap x Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) pilot aims to transform electric vehicle (EV) charging at one of Europe’s major airports into a data-driven, revenue-generating infrastructure line. Mobility hubs like Berlin Brandenburg Airport face challenges in scaling EV charging profitably due to fragmented data, unpredictable demand and evolving regulations. This pilot provides a replicable solution by combining real-time data pipelines, geospatial intelligence and explainable AI forecasting.

SurplusMap’s platform will integrate BER’s public and non-public charging infrastructure, relevant mobility data and energy data to analyse utilisation, benchmark performance and identify strategic opportunities. Key deliverables include a real-time Market Insights dashboard, an AI-powered decision support tool, and a feasibility study for EV charging infrastructure at the airport campus.

By the end of the project, BER will receive actionable insights for optimising charger deployment, explore profit-making playbook (i.e. dynamic pricing), and long-term EV infrastructure strategy. The pilot will also serve as a commercial proof-of-concept to convert BER into a paying customer under a scalable software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.

Beyond the airport, the project creates a blueprint for other large mobility hubs – retailers, parking operators and cities – facing similar electrification challenges. The pilot supports EU regulatory compliance (AFIR), advances sustainable mobility and demonstrates how EV charging infrastructure can be profitable, flexible and resilient.

Context

Mobility hubs lack tools to optimize EV charging performance, plan scalable infrastructure and integrate energy data – leading to underutilisation, high costs and lost revenue opportunities.

Challenge

Optimise EV charging at Berlin Airport using AI-powered forecasting, real-time data and geospatial analytics to increase utilisation, profitability and infrastructure scalability.

Expected outcome

Deliver a real-time dashboard, AI-powered decision support system, infrastructure performance benchmarks, and strategic recommendations tailored to Berlin Airport’s EV charging and energy needs.
