“[A] remarkable debut novel.”—Philip Caputo, New York Times Book Review (cover review)

Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize, a startling debut novel from a powerful new voice featuring one of the most remarkable narrators of recent fiction: a conflicted subversive and idealist working as a double agent in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.

The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as seven other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam.

The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship.

Editor's Note

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be an amazing and compelling read. It is beautifully written and provides a different perspective on the Vietnam War. The book explores themes of post-colonialism, internal conflict, and colorism. The protagonist's unique identity and the metaphorical elements make the story fascinating. The narrative deals with deep psychological, philosophical, and spiritual elements without feeling heavy. Overall, it is a flowing, eloquent, and honest book that grabs the reader's soul. It offers a remarkable view of the war from the Vietnamese perspective, although some readers find the portrayal of American white guilt to be suffocating and disturbing.

I'm still half way but can't wait to comment. What's fascinating is the metaphor, the dark humor and author's unique but revealing POV towards Vietnamese and American, if not East and West, advanced by the protagonist's special identity - oriental with occidental background. As a Chinese, I really can share the thinking paradigm by Vietnamese and we are no difference at all speaking of conscience system.

I really enjoyed this author’s style of writing, use of alliteration and creative adjectives. The story left loose ends, so I’m glad that he’s written a follow up novel. This made me think about American wars from a different perspective, which is desperately needed right now.

I didn’t really know what to expect with this book when I began, and it took me a little while to get sucked into the story, but I am so glad I stayed with it. It was definitely a good read.

This is one of the most disturbing books I have ever read. The American White Guilt is laid on so heavy it is almost suffocating. One of those books that will stay with me for a long time.

A compelling read indeed. As an African the post colonial experience and the endless wars that continue to divide us is a constant theme that resonates. The Cold War ideologies that fueled the internal conflict in this book are long forgotten in my part of the world as we invent new "us" and "them". The description of people by their complexion is also interesting that colorism is not just a black phenomenon but universal way that people of other races view themselves. I also learned a few new words.

It took me some time to become immersed. Why, I don't know. Because once I was I didn't want the book to end. The narrator - someone who I wanted to dislike at first 'grew' on me and as I read I developed empathy for this character.

That's because this is more than just a novel - it's a journey. Across the world and an even bigger expanse - the human mind. What I like best about this book was the way in which it dealt with very deep psychological , philosophical, spiritual and even political elements without ever feeling 'heavy'. Instead the narrative which has a perfect 'pace', at times challenged my thinking and at others aligned with it. It's a book you can read simply for the story it tells, or pause to ponder the implications of the human condition that it raises.

The climax being the best example I think. Whereas a lot of novels would have focused more on the physical journey, the place 'they' reached was fascinating and wonderfully Eastern. Honest, compelling, provoking and enlightening. Pun intended!

Very good and quite original, with a good mix of genres and a different perspective on the Vietnam War, Vietnamese refugees, and life in the United States, although in the final part it loses some momentum and the plot unnecessarily drags on. (Translated from Spanish)

Well. In my opinion, it loses momentum as it approaches the end. But overall it's good. Not something I'd recommend indiscriminately. But it's good reading, and that is never a small thing. (Translated from Spanish)
