Countries in Europe had done so decades earlier, but this was (sort) of undone by Bretton Woods, which fixed these fiat currencies to the (then) gold-backed US dollar. So there was still some gold in the currency system. The US had half of the world's gold supply in its reserve, so it seemed secure then.

It was 15 August 1971, with the XAU/USD rate still fixed at 35.00, when Nixon abandoned the gold standard, creating a US dollar that is backed solely by debt, debt that is increasing exponentially, debt that must increase exponentially.
