This is how K-9 actually looks, later on in the story, when he has healed from most of his experimental wounds. K-9 can actually take a lot of damge without dying, even being pretty much burned down to his bones (just one cell has to survive). Too bad he still feels the pain, and the pain is even worse when his wounda start to heal, which is why he would often damage himself so the healing process wouldn't kick in. The damage to his face and ears were done to him before the regeneration experiment on him succeeded, which is why those parts can't heal.
