(Author's Note: Sorry it's been so long since I've last posted something. Between things going on at home and getting distracted by Terraria and YouTube, I haven't really had much inspiration to draw as of late. But with the advent of Sonic Boom, I have found some inspiration for a few new works. This is only the first of what I've got planned, so please enjoy)
Long ago, back in my sophomore year of high school, I created my first ever Sonic fan character. He was a cyan-furred hedgehog with yellow Amy-styled bangs that I eventually named Slam. This was long before I started posting my art on DeviantART, Sheezy or Fur Affinity. I showed him to my friends to see what they all though, and they all said the same thing...
"Why did you recolor Sonic like that?"
I took those words to heart and began to redesign Slam a bit. I gave him a new outfit, added stripes to his quills, changed up his bangs. Around that time I had finally started posting things on dA, and when I asked what people thought...
"Dude, nobody likes recolors..."
So I continued to update his design. Making him bulkier, new outfit, altered quills and other details, but even now with his current design being more original than any of the other "official" hedgehog characters that SEGA have churned out themselves (pfft, as if...), Slam still gets called a recolor every now and again. It eventually became something of a self-implied running gag that I've decided to roll with for the sake of humor.
Fast forward to February 6th, 2014. Sonic Stadium posted the article that revealed the new designs for Sonic and Knuckles. After I got over the initial shock of how Knuckles managed to miss "Leg Day" (as people have put it), I started to take note of how Knuckles' new bulk reminded me of how I usually envision Slam. I've said in the past that I have difficulty depicting just how much "bulk" Slam is supposed to have, so I thought that having Slam react to Rad Red's new look like this might not only help to define just how I envision him, but also would make a cute little in-joke of a comic.
...I wonder if poor Slam will ever catch a break?

Slam: ....Why you little... *balls up fist and draws back*
Me: *grabs Slam's arm* WHOA there, big fella; he didn't mean anything by it. It was just a joke, I promise.
Slam: *glares at Slam422*
Me: If you ever want me to draw you again in the future, you will stand down. Or else.
Slam: .....Fine. But just for future reference, I don't appreciate dose kinda jokes. *storms off*
Me: ...Sorry about that; he's really touchy about the whole "recolor" thing...

True, but by that logic then Knuckles in Boom would be a recolor of every "buff" fan character out there. Unfortunately that's not the case considering that he's actually an official character in the series in general, in comparison to Slam who is just a fan character.
Not that I'm bothered by the fact, mind you...
