Imagine traveling back in time to Berlin in the summer of 1989. The wall has been standing for almost 30 years and everyone assumes that it is going to be standing for thirty more. What would people there and then say if they saw this photograph; if you were to tell them that in just a few short months the wall, which had cut across their lives, had kept their loved ones out of reach but just meters away, and had stood for so many decades as a cold unyielding symbol of the world's idological divide, was going to be rendered completely useless and torn into so many scattered pieces?
And it was only a quarter century ago; probably well within the lifetimes of everybody in that photograph. This speaks volumes about the human capacity for positive change; not over generations, but within lifetimes. There are far too many places in the world today where people speak all too often of conflict and eternal enemies as though they are commonplace and will rage on forever mired in death and suffering. But look again at this image. There are Furries posing in front of the Berlin Wall!. A colourless place that was once inextricably linked to oppression has been transformed into a scene rolling with colour and happiness. What was once inconcievable has happened. Nothing is impossible.
