This guy is a cross between a whitetail and a caribou, and I had fun hybridizing the antlers <3
I love the double-decker whitetail look <3
Thing is it is really hard to get the clay smooth when working over an armature (I cannot "roll snakes" which is the best way to get it smooth) and I have the clay on so thin I cannot sand it, and I feel another layer would make the antlers too thick... so I am just kinda hoping the textured look is okay with my customer...

The textured is nice, though you might bring out the texture by drybrushing acrylic on it. Like a lighting tan color? I use the technique on bone in painting miniatures and it adds a nice dimension.

If they don't like it, try this--
You're using paper clay, right? We used paper clay with the masks below and we didn't like the dried oatmeal look, so we put a thin layer of more traditional paper maché as the last layer, sanded it lightly to take the edges off when it was dry, added a lick of mod-podge, they were decently smooth.
