Hundreds of open steps are needed to get to the top of a blast furnace. Hopefully one of these days I will get to climb one, unfortunately the opportunity has not yet presented itself!

When blast furnaces are in operation, there is great danger of carbon monoxide poisoning (they produce vast quantities of CO), so it's tough to get anywhere close unless your job specifically requires it :(
