Mr. Weapons Policy 1988
Ah, for the younger days, when I was slim, trim and could buy all kinds of neat looking guns at the toy store (there's not a single actual gun in any of these photos; they're all from Kay Bee Toys, Kiddie City or Toys 'R' Us)...
Left and right top: The original sketch, Philcon, 1988. L-R: Rich Chandler, Sheila Humphrey (Hubert's distant cousin) and Yr. Humble Servant. Right bottom: A reprise done for a Philcon masquerade intro a year or two later. L-R: Rich, me, Craig Soderland and a passersby who got roped into the thing because her raincoat matched the theme. ;D
Josh Quagmire immortalized this skit later on... ;)
Gawd, I miss the pre-PC, pre-9/11 days when you could walk into a toy store and walk out with a very nice toy machine pistol...

The Starlyte riffles are still sought after today, though since there were WAY fewer units made they're actually starting to get a little bit on the pricey side. Recently I acquired one, although it was mint outside, it had acid damage inside. Thankfully they are easily repaired and while it now has a nonstandard illuminated scope (A modern white LED, which is too bright for nighttime scope use) it's still quite a toy!
If it worked last time, the odds are very good it'll work even today. The only thing that seems to kill them is battery acid and even then it's not automatically fatal. If you ever take one apart btw, make a 'map' of the screws, they aren't all the same length and there are a ton of them (It's almost as bad as taking apart a Powerbook G4 12" : D )
Believe it or not, Daisy made that, and I bought it at Toys 'R' Us in the mid-80s.
Had electronic sound effects. I rewired it, hooked up a tape player and rigged it to play "It's A Small World" when you pulled the trigger. Got big yocks at a ConFurence art auction...

Man, I wish there were toy guns like that these days. I would feel awesome having something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR9ojNddiSI , especially since I like to collect realistic looking guns for occasional use in crappy YouTube videos.
But of course it got ruined by people's stupidity, as you mentioned earlier. Either an idiot cop being too hasty to shoot someone (Hey! That random kid who's walking around with that realistic looking gun must be about to kill someone! Better shoot him!) or someone waving it around like it's real.
