Grandaddy's little monster
"That's right, child. Knowledge is power."
A little break between commissions.
Until Toby Fox confirms otherwise, I'm just gonna believe that Gaster and Chara had an important relationship. That Gaster had important relationships towards Sans, Asriel, and Chara… but especially towards Chara. That they were lab buddies, studying each other and each other's worlds.
And then, working with a curiously intelligent species which is most power-hungry by nature for too long, Gaster had what's coming for him. An "accident" made him fall into his own mysterious machine and disappear without a trace.
On a sidenote, I absolutely love the idea of yourself getting shred into million pieces and spread through time and space, being only available to meet for hackers, speaking in unreadable Wingdings font with a machinery soundeffect for voice. I mean it's one thing for someone to die, but becoming an error in the very system of your own home universe… is a really creatively good ghost story. Makes you wonder if it's a fate worse than death. Maybe Gaster became immortally stuck in that state. Or it's still part of Chara's ongoing plan ~ ?
Also, I have a thing for melted-lower-body-anatomy Gaster. It's kinda what I see in his sprite, and it makes him so much more haunting.

I really wonder what the deal with Gaster is. Some assume he is a character that was meant to be in the story, but was cut before the game was completed, only leaving a few hints of unused game data. Others assume his big reveal is still t come, and that more and more info about him is going to be added to the game incrementally. Or maybe what we have now is the way he was actually always intended to be, an idea that was shredded to pieces and scattered across time and space, only leaving a few, inconsistent pieces of idea in places where only the most determined would dare looking.
I kind of think Toby Fox is the type of person who would do something like the last option. He's proven that he is one of the very few developers who actually uses the entire concept of what an idea, a game or a character is as part of his art.

I agree that Toby seems the guy which values mysteries, which I find a good thing in stories. You need to leave space for the imagination of the audience.
I heard they plan to make another Undertale game, though, which was already planned when they opened their first Kickstarter. Maybe it will turn out to be a prequel?

Yeah, I heard that their "stretch goals" were like "whatever money will be left is going to be used to expand the universe further", which might very much be another undertale game :) I would absolutely love to see that, though I am not sure whether it's going to have the same impact as the first one. Part of that was because nobody was really expecting anything when Undertale (1) came out. Still, I'd love a prequel. Maybe even from the time before the barrier?
