How do you make patterns in such a precise way?

There are a couple of tutorials on youtube :) I mostly make an even square, say 5000 x 5000 px and fill it in, than define pattern and see how it looks like, then copy paste the square like 4 times around the middle one, as tiles and fill in the side parts (god too hard to explain for me here hahah XD but it's from tutorials and very easy :D )
