In a chat I was in someone brought up the idea of a person swelling up like a bomb because they ate a spellsheet, and I couldn't resist bringing it to life as a story! Starring August as the unlucky blimp bomb :3
Professor August eats a student's questionable spellsheet to prove a point, but soon finds himself swelling up...
Explosive Lesson

Kyler stared intently as he carefully inked an incantation in his spellbook.
A student at the Rainwood Mage College, the orange-and-white rabbit had gained a keen interest in what he liked to consider “extracurricular” spells—mainly ones that served well in pranks. Such pursuits were against the rules, of course, and being caught with a questionable page written in your tome was a good way to get punished. Despite the risks, Kyler couldn’t resist.
He’d layered a series of spells into a complex masterpiece he expected to one day bear his name, the perfect legacy for his college career.
So focused on his work, Kyler neglected remain aware of his surroundings—even when a wide shadow loomed over him.
“A-hem!”
Kyler nearly jumped out of his seat, blushing and cowering as light laughter spread throughout the classroom. Standing before Kyler’s desk was his professor, a rotund gray goat named August.
“Mr. Kyler, I thought you were dutifully taking down notes for the lecture, but from the looks of things you were busy adding something to your spellbook instead?”
“Oh. Um, just a couple strokes here and there in between my actual notes!” Kyler lied. He nervously reached for his spellbook to close it, but Professor August was quicker.
There was silence as August glanced over the open page, piecing together the cluttered mess of words and symbols. His shaking head was enough to tell Kyler he’d been found out.
“Clever, Kyler, but a second year student shouldn’t be dealing with anything this volatile,” Professor August said. “Enchanting items to swell up and explode like bombs? The campus would be enduring mysterious spontaneous firework shows all year!”
Kyler hadn’t come up with an innocent cover story for his spell, and didn’t bother throwing poor excuses the Professor’s way.
The offending page was torn out of Kyler’s spellbook and crumpled up into a ball, prompting the rabbit to wince at the destruction of his hard work. Recreating the spell wouldn’t be impossible, but he’d be forced to go off his memory.
Rather than throw the spell away, Professor August abruptly tossed it into his mouth and swallowed it down in one gulp. “Can’t have you digging it out of the trash when I’m not looking,” he chuckled as he waddled away to continue his lecture.
After the brief interruption class continued as usual. Inside August’s stomach, though, the spell page began to faintly glow. The light spread outward, taking on an orangish-yellow tint. Then the hissing started.
Faint and muffled by layers of soft pudge, Professor August couldn’t hear the suspicious noise over his own talking. Nor did he feel the swelling of his already-round middle.
The students themselves were busy taking notes, but one-by-one they noticed something odd was happening. Some doubted their sight as they swore the goat’s belly had grown bigger. The strain on August’s vest was undeniable, creases smoothed away as the material stretched. It’d been enchanted to handle his frequently-shifting girth, and while it wasn’t likely to tear it still managed to look somewhat snug.
Eyes drifted in unison towards Professor August’s ballooning belly. Quiet snickers popped up here and there. No one seemed eager to inform the Professor of his apparent predicament, either because they found it more interesting than the lesson or they were worried of getting in trouble for not warning him sooner. Instead it became an unspoken game to see just how long it’d take him to realize he was inflating.
Professor August had ceased wandering the room in order to discuss a particular point at length, keeping him oblivious even longer. He was almost comically round, enough so to bounce if he’d been pushed over.
Along with the hissing—which was getting louder and louder—warmth had begun to spread throughout Professor August’s body. A quizzical look came upon his face as he wiped his brow, the heat finally making him suspicious. He went to pat his middle with a hoof and made contact with its taut surface far sooner than expected.
When the Professor actually looked down he let out a startled bleat. The amusement of his class could no longer be contained, and the vast majority of them burst into laughter, ignoring the stern glares August gave them in return.
Right away August began trying to work out what was happening to him. It was a spell—obviously—but not just a simple inflation one. He was heating up, especially around his middle where a good deal of mana was building. Then there was the hissing.
Realization suddenly hit the goat, and his suspicions were confirmed when he belched up a few colorful sparks. A bomb. He was turning into a bomb.
Somehow the spellsheet he’d eaten had gone off within him.
The mere thought of becoming a giant firework in front of a whole class made the Professor blush. He cleared his throat loudly to quiet the dying laughter, attempting to retain control.
“Settle down, settle down, this is just a temporary distraction,” August insisted, doing his best to pretend his limbs and face hadn’t also begun puffing and heating up. There was a faint glow to his hide.
Professor August took a few deep breaths and brushed aside the persistent hissing. Dissipating spells wasn’t his forte, but surely a spell jumbled together by a student wouldn’t be too hard to deal with.
He poked and prodded at the spell with his own magic, all the while swelling up more and more. His confidence wavered as Kyler’s creation proved far more competent than expected. The heat and pressure within him were increasing, the goat’s body just spherical enough to immobilize him. He was glowing as bright as a lantern.
The students closest to the blimping Professor suddenly became aware they were in a potential blast zone. Once they heard creaks amongst the hissing they abandoned their seats, causing a chain reaction. Fear of getting caught in an explosion outweighed any fear of being punished for ditching class. Students were hastily grabbing their belongings and fleeing in mass, and even the boldest ones were staying close to the door.
Kyler was among them.
The rabbit observed the first unofficial test of his spell with awe. Professor August had become a ball, his limbs swollen and engulfed and his head sunken. He was too bright to look at for long, and even from the far side of the room Kyler could hear the hissing. A firm poke could’ve popped him.
Professor August couldn’t think straight anymore. The hissing, the pressure, the heat, the raw energy of it all...it was simply too much. His efforts to disperse the spell had ended, and the goat bomb was left waiting to inevitably go off, much to his embarrassment. The few thoughts he could manage were dedicated to the punishment he’d inflict upon Kyler once he was back in one piece.
From a distance the Professor’s whole body visibly quaked, and the last lingering students frantically bailed.
A frustrated bleat rang out, followed by a room-rattling boom as August swelled beyond his limits. The screaming of fireworks filled the room and corridors outside as colorful sparks flew all over, bouncing off the desks, the walls, the ceiling. They burst into simple shapes, lighting up the rain of glowing goat confetti.
A couple stray fireworks found their way into the hall, causing the students to scramble for cover once more.
The show was loud, but brief. As soon as the noise had died down Kyler nervously returned to the classroom.
All that remained of Professor August were scraps of hide, still lit and warm to the touch. Desks and chairs had been pushed around by the force of both the explosion and the ensuing fireworks. There were some scorch marks, and a splintered cabinet door where one of the Professor’s horns had embedded, but the damage was minimal.
Kyler doubted that’d give him any leniency.
Conflicted between the pride in the success of his spell and the consequences that undoubtedly would come of it, Kyler decided to take the rest of the day off. At least he could enjoy himself before the eventual summons to Professor August’s office...
