The Legend of Miller
Chapter 1

So, about 180 years ago, my siblings and I were still in our eggs, during a stormy summer’s night perched in the mountains. My mom and dad were thrilled with anticipation, eagerly awaiting their three eggs to finally hatch.
“This is so wonderful…” my mom said to my dad.
“I’ve never been happier” my dad replied. “We are going to be such awesome parents.”
My mom laughed. “I certainly hope so.”
They nuzzled their noses as my egg started to crack. “Look!” my father exclaimed.
My egg shattered all around me and I fell out into a sticky mess, blind and completely oblivious to the world. I gave out a tiny, high-pitched cry as my brother started poking his head out of his shell.
However, my sister’s egg remained cold and still.
My dad was worried, but my mom knew what to do. She gently knocked on the side of the egg once or twice, and crack! The egg fell apart all around my sister.
But she was just laying there, barely breathing.
My mom scooped her up in her arms as fast as she could, “I’m taking her to the clinic!” and flew off into the storm.
“Wait!” my dad yelled, scooping my brother and I up as he flew off after my mom.
Now, I don’t really remember any of this (for obvious reasons), but I do remember feeling the sensation of flight for the first time, and being scared out of my mind. Because suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck my dad! And we all went crashing down into the woods below.
“Malni!” my mother yelled, looking behind her. She turned around, and dove down to try and stop my father’s fall. She made it just in time - she actually broke his fall with her back, and they both crashed below a giant tree, me and my sibling’s tiny bodies still clenched in their arms. One of her wings had become broken, and now it was just my wounded mom, my unconscious dad, my sister who’s breath was slowing by the second, and my brother and I crying into the night.
“Help…” my mom muttered, but we were in the middle of the wilderness, and nobody could hear her.
My mom conjured up a temporary healing spell to keep my sister going through the night. This sapped a ton of her energy, and considering she was already in agonizing pain from a broken wing, she was spent. Luckily we had the giant tree to (mostly) shelter us from the rain.
My brother and I were still crying up a storm, and if we didn’t calm down, we could draw the attention of the night stalkers - shadowy monsters that roam the wilderness at night. My mom tried to shush us, but to no avail. We were scared, cold, and hungry - we had been hatched for far too long without food.
My mom somehow mustered up the strength to crawl out into the woods, find a deer, and bring it back to my brother and I. Then, she made an ointment out of some berries and vine for my father’s burns. THEN, she refreshed the spell on my sister, and somehow still managed to stay up all night watching over us, keeping the night stalkers at bay.
The next morning, we were found by a patrol of Draconis Royal Guards, and were immediately rushed to my mom’s clinic. They were able to steady my sister’s breathing, and bring my dad back to consciousness. My mom was finally able to rest, with my siblings and I cuddled around her. My father, looking upon my mom, whispered, “Gods, you’re amazing.”
Apparently the entire town of Dragon Falls had come to check up on us - and considering the population is 900 dragons - that’s a lot of visitors!
After the excitement had settled down, my father and mother were lying together admiring us. My dad spoke up, “Have we settled on the names yet? You know I have to name one of them Maolisx after my father.”
My mother sighed. “I know, I know. The younger of the brothers can be named after him.” My mother nuzzled my head. “But I want this one to be… Miller.”
“Miller?! That’s not a dragon name!”
My mom snapped back, “It’s a human name! And I like it! We don’t have to be traditional all the time!”
My dad huffed smoke, but he knew there was nothing he could do.
“And what about this miracle hatchling?” my mom nuzzled my sister.
My dad cheered up, “Well come on now, we both agreed Virchis was an awesome name for a girl.”
My mom laughed.
“I love you Malni.”
“I love you too, Auror.”
