The Legend of Miller
Chapter 1

Fifty years later, and we’re ready for our first day of school! I remember the smell of my dad breathing fire on the bacon in the morning. Not that I eat bacon or anything; my perfect breakfast was simply an apple and a banana.
“The other kids are gonna tease you, you know.” my sister told me at the breakfast table.
“Virchis!” my mom scolded her.
“It’s true. Nobody’s ever heard of a vegetarian dragon before.” Virchis replied.
“The Earth Dragons are all vegetarians.” my dad stated from behind his news scroll.
“Yeah, but we are NOT Earth Dragons.” my sister glared at me.
I bit into my apple. “I bet that pig wished we were.”
My mom got up, “Alright, can we not have this debate for once? It’s the first day of school. We need to get going. Everybody got your things?”
We all rushed for the door, and jumped off the side of the cliff where our house was perched. Mao and Virchis flew alongside my dad, while I rode on my mom’s back.
“You know you’re going to have to learn how to fly sooner or later” she whispered. I thought back to the thunderstorm, and closed my eyes. “Just let me know when we’re there” I told her.
We flew into Dragon Falls, and arrived at Dragonfly Elementary, where tons of young drakes and their parents were scurrying into the building. I hopped off my mom’s back.
“We’re still going to Spring Woods when we get out, right?” I asked. Spring Woods was my favorite park in all of Dragon Falls.
“That’s right. And don’t worry. It’ll be over before you know it.” she told me.
We kissed our mom goodbye, and she flew off to the clinic. Then we followed our dad up the stairs and into the giant doors of Dragonfly Elementary.
“Alright kids, I’m off to work. You guys know where your classrooms are, right?” my dad asked.
“You mean we’re not all in the same class?!” I complained.
“Afraid not. Just meet me outside when school’s over, okay? Love you guys.” and he took off down the hall. My brother and sister confidently parted ways as well. But I felt panicked and intimidated. Drakes and dragons were hurrying every which way! How was I supposed to know where ‘room 121 B’ was?
I could feel my eyes getting watery, but then I looked up and saw a giant sign saying “ROOM 121 B THIS WAY”.
“Oh” I thought, and hurried along.
I walked into the room, and about a dozen other drakes of different colors, shapes, and sizes were sitting at their dragon desks. I chose an empty seat, and gazed at amazement at all the pictures and signs posted all over the walls. Then a loud bell rang and interrupted my thoughts.
Our teacher walked in. She introduced herself, and then the class took turns introducing themselves. Then we started learning how to spell in draconic for what seemed like an eternity, and then the bell rang again.
We all rushed outside to recess and lunch. Some drakes were happy to finally stretch their wings and fly around the obstacle course outside. Others began to chow down on fish and pork their parents had packed them for lunch. I sat near a tree and pulled out a bag of carrots my mom had packed me.
Another drake approached. I recognized him from my class. Inferno. He was red and chubby, and his breath sort of stank. He pushed into me hard and yelled “Tag! You’re it!” and flew off, the other kids playing tag not far behind him.
“But I don’t know how to fly…” I said meekly.
Inferno came back down. “Wait, you don’t know how to fly?” He started laughing. “Hey guys! He doesn’t know how to fly!”
The other drakes started circling above me laughing.
“And what’s this crap?” he grabbed my bag of carrots.
“Hey, give that back!” I yelled.
“You don’t eat meat?” he asked.
“It’s none of your business!” I yelled, trying to get my food back from, but he was bigger (fatter) than me, and I couldn’t reach. One of the drakes flying above threw a chicken bone down at my head. The laughter continued.
Suddenly, the bully was engulfed in flame! Mao was flying in, breathing fire down upon Inferno’s chubby fat face. He started crying in pain, the drakes above scattered, and some of the teachers flew over.
“You alright?” Mao asked. I was fighting hard to hold back the tears.
One of the teachers flew in. “Alright, you know the rules, no breathing fire in school! And on the first day too? To the principles office, both of you.” She started to brush Inferno’s face, patting out the flames.
“Inferno, are you causing trouble AGAIN?” the teacher asked him, and yanked him up by his horn. My brother was yanked up as well.
Soon, I was sitting by myself, my brother taken away, and my carrots scattered out across the ground. I couldn’t hold it in anymore, and started crying. But luckily bell rang soon after, and I was able to run back inside.
