The cliche is that "dragons and squirrels are next of kin", which is meant to be commentary on the equalizing nature of greed. Squirrels are peerless hoarders, literally and metaphorically; this refers to the gathering of material but also information, knowledge and power. It is not the same as kleptomania, because squirrels are more than willing to work for their possessions legitimately, but they then take great stock in ownership. This can lead to a miserly, hermitage existence of accumulation without purpose nor joy.
"You never know when it might come in handy," is a typical squirrel mantra. Other rationalizations include scrounging against some hypothetical future scarcity. At root is a fear of the future and the unknown. A squirrel's worst fear is to be without options, unprepared. They are consummate control freaks, highly superstitious and particular about their possessions.
Those that can make use of this compulsion tend to succeed spectacularly as merchants, financiers, pawnbrokers, curators, and other forms of trade. They aren't much for travelling abroad, unless their "hoard" is small enough to be portable, and even the most healthy-minded squirrels tend to be collectors of something. It is not unusual for a squirrel to keep on-hand a pouch of bent coins, or chipped marbles, or found keys, those with piratical leanings usually sport an elaborate variety of piercings or tattoos, etc.
Less literally, though perhaps more surprisingly, squirrels can be just as ruthlessly eager to acquire intangibles like information, influence, power and prestige - and just as selfish once achieved. If there are deals to be made with devils for arcane truths, then squirrels are usually the ones to make them. This can mean dabbling in the occult, necromancy, alchemy, but also the more rigorous sciences. However squirrels aren't usually willing to share any advances they make in these fields. Due to this isolation and a tendency to jealously guard their secrets, learned squirrels can veer off into fringe areas of study and weird science.
In the historical record, it is almost routine for some isolated squirrel, after a lifetime of gathering resources and knowledge to then emerge with a warped notion of reshaping the world for the better. However hubris is usually the downfall of such careers - that and a blind spot for dealing with the chaos of the real world. Squirrels can be blinded by their knowledge; unable to see an object without viewing it through a lens or to know the world beyond atlases and encyclopedias. A squirrel will sell her soul for the power of far-seeing, or seek the secondhand visions of a crystal ball, when the door is open, the sun is shining and all there is can be known by simply going outside.
Squirrels are the kind of people to plan their meals months in advance, on a calendar, in ink.

I think I joygasmed just a little seeing the Tree of Life in this image.
There are so many small details about this image that I enjoy-- the illusion of sticky, slimey goop coming off that tentacle, the eerie green lighting contrasting with the warm reds, the way he's posed like the viewer's just interrupted him in the middle of some very important business indeed. I love the way the light plays off his fur, too-- with the linework it makes the image feel really textured, and gives it a sort of 'real' sense of weight and depth. I think, aesthetically, this might be one of my favorites of your ironclaw pieces so far-- there's a depth to the field of vision and a richness to the colors that draws you in to look around the picture more.

Indeed -- though the conjunction of Qabalism and the accompanying narrative description might suggest Unfortunate Implications to some.

Certainly not my intention, I can only offer that perhaps because I'm in the middle of reading Foucault's Pendulum, I am being influenced. That part of the image was originally going to be a window, showing a sunny day with a prominent apple tree in view (suggesting the "Tree of Knowledge"). I didn't like the lighting effect and changed it to this, enjoying the connection from one "Tree" to another in the sephirot. I suppose either icon would suggest unfortunate implications. But it's an easy fix to swap in something equally suggestive of mysticism and arcane knowledge without putting such a fine point on the details. I'll take care of that now.
Any unfortunate implications didn't occur to me, but as much as I liked the Tree of Life being there (aesthetically, at least, I think it has a very strong visual... design? I don't know how to describe it) I think the new poster is even better! The difference in the linework of the original poster with the rest of the picture was a little off; now the weight of the lines on the new poster really ties it to the rest of the image.
I really need to give Eco another try. Never read Dan Brown. I've read Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln, though, and of course I've read Shea and Wilson

When most people look at squirrels, they see them flouncing and bouncing across the lawn, scampering up a tree, playing hide and seek, and try to anthropomorphize them as "cute" and "playful".
They don't look at their FACES.
The flouncing and the bouncing and the scampering are just accidents of gait. You, sir, have looked in a squirrel's eyes, and realized the truth: Squirrels mean SERIOUS BUSINESS.
The details are delicious. Did you draw that Tree of Life yourself, or is it a public domain image?

I've been nudging Rafferty toward clip art sources for another Sanguine project; I didn't realize that PG had clip art, as well.
I've heard that scans of the complete Voynich Manuscript are online; someday, I'm going to have a copy printed out and nicely bound, without commentary, just for grins.

What I wouldn't give to spend a few hours (decades) studying what's on those shelves. Especially anything alchemical. I wonder if he ever plays 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' with his tentacled room mate there. Though, I can't imagine him getting bored very easily with all those wondrous things to study.
Our sorcerer is growing his own baby Cthulhu in that beaker, hee hee! Intense and focused, just like these cunning little bastards are when they climb up into our bird feeder and crane their necks out to just grab two seeds. Nice touch that you snuck in your Arabic-looking eyes script! Any inspiration from this image, by chance?

This was probably one of my favorites out of the series. A mixture of the color combination and I love the environment you made for him. The whole series you've gone through great pains to make sure the background spoke just as much about the character as their own body language and clothing did. This one in particular you did an awesome job of making a warm study space for this guy.
I think another thing I like is your lack of fear and avoiding lines and simply painting the picture but I think that comes from your lengthy experience with many mediums.
always a pleasure looking at your art man.
