I'm dead now. Please don't smoke.
RIP Debbie IV (1988-1991), one of my few girls who died peacefully in her sleep (and not of an enormous tumor, vaginal hemorrhaging, etc).

We had rats too, but after a few chew through the wires escapes and nesting in the closet ruining lots of clothes, we ended that.
I'm the same way with iguanas, like owning a cat that doesn't claw the furnature, hack up hairballs or go into heat and yowl. Plus no kitty ass in the face in early morning.
Like cats, they generally ignore you unless its feeding time or a warm lap. Plus a big iguana will scare the living shit out of your average person.

My female has had both, well, the doctor wanted to remove the lump with surgery, but I was skeptical. I thought it might be what I thought first: an abscess. The doc said "Well I suppose there is no harm letting it go for a week or two while you give her antibiotics." So I did, it cleared up! I lucked out
Then she had some nasty looking vaginal bleeding. I had her get a hysterectomy, for some reason the cost was subsidized or something. It was kind of hard though because she was two years old, and I didn't know how she would take the anesthesia and bodily trauma. She survived.
She's about 2 and 1/2 years old now, and going strong. But I know she doesn't have much time left. I feel lucky for having her past 2 years, if that is the average!
I can understand why you still feel strongly for your 1988 rat.
I hope mine can die peacefully like yours did!!
