For my Dad's 60th birthday we offered him a surprise Left 4 Dead adventure.
He had friends for dinner (who were our accomplices) and everything appeared normal. After dinner, my Mom asked him to get some Coke and handed him some GPS coordinates. That in itself seemed weird because my parents NEVER drink Coke. (those of you with L4D2 will recognize where I go the idea... hehe). All my dad's friends got up and got their coat and started saying "Come on, we'll go with you!" which seemed awfully suspicious to my dad because it was raining.
As he opened the front door, he almost stepped on an army shirt, a beret, a revolver and an assault riffle. (all guns are toys, obviously). See, my Dad always plays Bill when we play L4D2. Plus now that he's grown a beard he looks exactly like Bill. The funny part is he decided to grow a beard AFTER we had started working on that project.
There were arrows drawn on the sidewalk with symbols of a little house with a cross in it. Following both these and his GPS coordinates, he got to a city park. And he heard crying.
Near the entrance was a Witch, sitting there and crying. A friend of my dad got close to see (as planned) while others backed away and as my Dad was going to save the one that was caught with the Witch, one of the stragglers got caught by the tongue of a Smoker.
After killing both monsters and getting rid of the common infected walking around in the park, they got to a small corridor between the wall of a building and a fence. Sure enough they heard a Charger yelling. And as the Charger spread confusion (and body parts) as he rushed to them screaming, a Hunter pounced one of the survivors and my Dad had to save everyone again.
At the end of the corridor they found a corner and around that corner they found a Boomer who vomited Green Glow in the Dark Party String all over them. There was a howl and the Horde started charging them from everywhere.
Hopefully once all the infected were dealt with, they found, at the foot of a lamppost, a Health pack, a bottle of pills a shot gun and an AK-47. Because sure enough they weren't out of the wood yet. As they were getting closer to the Coke, my Dad's friends mentionned "Don't you feel like the ground is shaking?" and my Dad thought "No way... Not the Tank..." And out from the kid's playground came the Tank rushing and grunting.
When they were finally safe again, one of my Dad's friend found something on a bench. "Hey what's this? HOOOOOOOOOONK!" It was an air horn. There was a howl as the Horde started to charge once more. My Dad rushed to grab the Coke and they all ran out of the park to safety.
My Dad was really impressed and it took him a good week to calm down and stop re-living it. He told me he might get over it by the time he turns 70. Mission accomplished.
I played the Hunter.
We also took the precaution of warning the local police about the event in case people called being alarmed by the sight of adults with guns in a park.

I'd like to point out we celebrated my Dad's birthday on May 8th and my Mom told me a few days ago, more than 4 months later, that at dinner he was STILL re-living it. :p
That is exactly what I meant when I was trying to explain to my Dad's friend why we did not mind all the money and efforts that went into the costumes and accessories and did not mind trashing them after the event even though we had only used them for half an hour. The event they were used for did NOT last half an hour. It started a couple of months before when we all got excited over the project. And it will last for years after, as long as my Dad remembers it. It goes way beyond half an hour. :)
Since some have asked for it, here are some pictures. We didn't take any of the event itself because we were expecting to have a video (technical difficulties prevented that, my Mom felt so guilty she cried over it, poor thing)
Here's the map of the park onto which I had traced the the attacks as we had planned them. I sent this to both the victims and the monsters so they'd have a better idea what to expect.

My dad took pictures the next day, of him pausing as Bill (fake cigarette too) as well as him sleeping with his beret, guns and werewolf doll (which I offered to him on Christmas a few years back because he kept playing with mine)

We are! Plus me and my friends are all into Live Action Role Playing games, so we're accustomed and willing to do that kind of stuff even in the rain. I was actually impressed by my Dad's friends who not only were willing to do that but did an awesome job at leading him around and playing their victims part. ;) They also happily said they did not care rolling around in the mud in case of rain (which is good since it did rain in the end). My Dad is a very loved man. :)
