This headshot, by Red BaronWolf, still brings a huge smile to my face every time I look at it. I see this interpretation as a more experienced Dai, perhaps having served in the RAF for decades and being too old to fly the faster jets. Perhaps he’s now an instructor at the college at Cranwell, or perhaps even a commanding officer far too tied up in administrative duties to be included on the flying rota. But while he may be stuck on the ground, that look in his eyes will never leave. It’s a look I’ve seen in the eyes of everyone I know who’s ever flown at the controls of a plane, marvelling at the miracle of flight and wishing to join them in defying gravity’s pull. And when it is men and women under your watch and guidance, who have been sent to the sky by your command, that look comes with the hope that this time you see the plane climbing for the heavens will not be the last time.
