A story about
tiggers97jaf being pecked for a role in a TV show. However, he ends up with not quite the role he was expecting
I really don’t like the ending to this and will be working on improving it down the line. Adding more scenes, showing him learning to fly.

As Joel strolled onto the film lot, he was excited. He had been picked to be an extra in a TV show - and in a talking role, no less! He’d dreamed for years of being in the movies, being an actor. To him, this could be the beginning of something so much bigger. Every famous star started somewhere, and not always glamorously. He’d been reading the script, practicing his 2 lines, for weeks.
The TV show he was to be in was simply titled ‘Polly Roger’. It was a kids’ show about the various misadventures of the crew of the Polly Roger, a pirate ship in the north Pacific. The mascot of the show, Polly, was a huge hit among fans.
He showed the badge he’d been given to the guard at the gate. The man gestured toward a low building off to the right. “Go inside and knock at the third door. They’re expecting you.” Joel nodded and quickly entered the building.
He found the door halfway down a long hallway. He raised his fist to knock…
“We can’t cancel the next season!”
He paused, hand raised. A man he didn’t recognize. He knew better than to eavesdrop, but panic took him. If they discontinued the show, that’d be the end of his dreams of stardom. He pressed his ear to the door and listened intently.
“He’s the star of the show,” another, older man he recognized as Director Bernard answered calmly. “Without him, there is no show. It’ll be at least 6 months before he recovers, and even longer until he can return.”
“But...but our contract! The agreement with PBS! This is millions of dollars we’re talking about! If we don’t have another 3 episodes filmed by the end of the year, we’re finished.”
There was a long, drawn-out silence. Joel’s heart fell into his stomach. This didn’t sound good.
“I’ve been talking with the producers and we have something in mind,” the first man said. “All we need is someone to stand in for him, just for a few months.” Another silence and Joel heard the clinking of glass. “I’ve been looking over the roster and Joel Forrest fits the bill perfectly.”
Joel started at this, surprised to hear his name mentioned.
“But that’s...no, that’s a bad idea. The repercussions…”
“...will be much worse if we don’t do anything. Go find Mr. Forrest, please. He should’ve arrived by now.”
Joel quickly knocked on the door as footsteps approached, to avoid being found out. A middle-aged man opened it. Both men looked startled.
“Ah, perfect timing, Joel!” the director said cordially, recovering quickly. He gestured for Joel to enter. “Come in, come in!”
Joel entered the office and the other man walked out. The latter gave him a concerned look from behind.
Director Bernard was sitting behind an oak desk, drinking from a glass of whiskey. There was another full glass on the desk.
“I was told to come here,” Joel said quickly. “I auditioned a few weeks ago to be an extra.”
“Yes, yes, I’m aware of that.” The man studied Joel for a moment. “But first...how much of that conversation did you overhear?”
Joel was caught off-guard and stammered, “I...I didn’t…”
The man shook his head. “Don’t lie to me, Mr. Forrest. I can be reasonable if you tell the truth.”
“I…” Joel sighed and decided to come clean. “I...I came up as he said the next season can’t be cancelled.”
Bernard nodded and seemed to relax. He leaned back in the chair. “Hm…” He looked down at the glass on the desk, the one he hadn’t drunk from, and then back up at Joel. “Then you know we’re in serious trouble right now.” He gestured to a chair and Joel sat down. He lifted the glass. “Whiskey?”
Joel shook his head. “I’m not 21 yet, sir.”
“Oh, it’s fine, I won’t tell if you don’t.” He pushed the glass closer to Joel. “I’ll give it to you straight, Mr. Forrest: we’re in deep shit right now. Our star was in a car crash early this morning. He’s alive and will recover, but not for months. We’re at risk of losing our contract with PBS Kids.”
That conversation was making a lot more sense now. Joel didn’t know much about the man outside of his acting career, but Johnathan Kane had played the lead role in the show for years, as the pirate captain and Polly’s favourite shoulder to perch on. John was several years older, but with a little makeup, Joel could be the spitting image. They were about the same height.
“So, you want me to fill in for him,” he said, finishing the line of thought. “Of course I’ll do it. Mr. Kane’s a legend!”
“Mister…?” The man paused, then quickly nodded. “Yes, John would appreciate it greatly - and so would I.” He stood up. “Of course, we’ll have to change YOUR contract, but that won’t take long.” He lifted his own glass. “As long as you don’t screw it up, this could be the beginning of a major career for you, Mr. Forrest.” He gestured to the other glass. “I think a toast is in order.”
This time, Joel took the drink. A role as the captain of the Polly Roger...that was a million times better than being an extra. Mountains of cash and glory streamed through his mind’s eye as he took a drink from the glass…
...and almost immediately, he staggered, coughing violently. Pain tore through him and he cried out, “WHAT’S HAP-AHHHH!!!!”
He didn’t know what was happening, what was causing it. In his mind, it happened out of the blue. He fell backwards onto the floor, knocking over the chair he’d been sitting in.
“I’m really sorry about this,” Bernard apologized, “but you wouldn’t have agreed if I told you the truth.”
Joel’s back wrenched and he cried out in pain. Then his whole body started to shake violently. He started to shrink slowly. The bones in his face cracked, his fingers started to lengthen, pinfeathers pushed out of his pores. He stared at his hands in confusion. His elbows and hands cracked into a new alignment. He tried to stand and staggered backwards, tripping over his own feet as his shoes grew too big.
He gasped in pain, the agony starting to lessen as he grabbed his face with his warped hands. He felt more than saw it as the bones shifted and a beak pushed out of his mouth, forcing his lips apart. His cracked violently, shifting into a completely different shape as a toe disappeared on each and 2 migrated backwards. He wiggled his weird-looking new toes, confused still by what was happening. Suddenly, he let out an unmistakable squawk as his back cracked again, hunching him over. His legs shortened, disappearing into his pants.
Red, green and blue feathers covered his body as the world disappeared behind his tented clothing, Long tail feathers stretched from his butt.
And then, it was over.
Joel lay there for what felt like an eternity, in shock and confusion. What the fuck just happened? His body felt wrong - in every conceivable way.
Suddenly, huge hands reached down to him and pulled away his clothing. It was Bernard, who was now a LOT bigger than him. The man was smiling happily.
Joel looked down at himself as the man picked him up. Feathers...talons...a beak…
“Ah, you came out perfect,” Bernard commented, stroking his head. “You’re the spitting image, and exactly the macaw we needed!”
A macaw? Like a bolt of lightning, it finally hit Joel what happened, and he was immediately furious. They tricked him, turned him into a bird! He didn’t know how this man did it, but it pissed him off that they lied to him.
Bernard started to carry him toward the door. “Now, we just need to-OW!!!” he cried out in pain, dropping the bird in surprise as Joel bit down on his hand. The latter squawked indignantly at him, doing his best to stand upright on his new legs. The man quickly approached him and knelt down. “It’s alright, I promise! The potion will wear off in a few hours.”
HOURS?!?!? He didn’t want to be a bird at all! He hissed angrily.
“I know you’re angry,” the man quickly continued, “and you have every right to be, but we really need your help right now. You would’ve never agreed to it if we told you the full truth. A lot is on the line right now and we’re desperate.” He paused. “However, not everything I said was a lie. Jack the Macaw broke both of his wings in a car accident, and we NEED a substitute.”
Joel paused at this, his temper cooling just a bit. Jack the Macaw...that was the bird that played Polly in the show, the mascot/fan favourite. Joel hated to admit it, but that explained a LOT. He thought they were talking about the HUMAN lead actor. He looked down at himself, back at his multi-colored tail. ~I look just like Jack!~
“The offer still stands,” Bernard said, “For every episode you do for us until Jack recovers, you’ll be paid $30,000. I’ve already talked it over with our financers and they agreed. In addition to that, you’ll be paid $50,000 up-front as a sign of good faith.”
Joel was dead silent for a long time, his beak hanging open. ~50…$50,000…?~ College tuition, mansions, fancy cars...the things he could do with that kind of money...even just an episode or 2…
“What do you say, Joel?” the man asked with a smile. “Will you be our new Polly?”
Joel nodded vigorously, squawking, “Awk! Polly wanna cracker! Awk!” He nodded his head up and down, in that special way only a parrot can. He almost fell on his beak as he lost his balance, but Bernard caught him.
“I’ll take that as a yes, then.” Bernard carefully picked Joel up and this time Joel let him. He was carried out the door and into the hallway.
This definitely wasn’t how Joel expected his day to go, and he’d never understand how they turned him into a bird, but he was ecstatic. Animal actors were loved by everyone.
Everyone turned to look at them as they entered a green room. They looked surprised. Several were dressed in comical pirate costumes, standing around a table.
“Wait, he actually agreed?” a man Joel recognized as John asked. He was tall and lean, with brown hair and eyes, in his thirties.
“Of course he did,” a woman answered. “With how much they’re paying him, wouldn’t you?”
“Alright, everyone,” Bernard said cordially. “Yes, Joel agreed to it, which means we can move forward.” He held up his arm holding Joel. “Joel, this is actually a good scene to start you with, since Polly doesn’t do much in it. You’ll be perched on John’s shoulder throughout. Follow his head movements, but for the most part just focus on balancing. Understand?” Joel nodded and Bernard approached John.
“Don’t worry, I work with Jack all the time,” John said as Joel hopped onto his shoulder. Joel was surprised to find a perch built into the costume shoulder, a little ridge he could grip easily. No one would see it looking at the costume, even up close. He settled comfortably on the man’s shoulder.
“Alright, let’s take it from the top,” Bernard declared, gesturing to the cameraman. “Scene 17, take 4.”
Joel remembered this scene from the script. It took place inside the ship and had the captain and his first mate discussing a new expedition. Joel wasn’t going to be in the scene as an extra.
Joel followed the scene flawlessly, looked wherever John looked. They eventually moved on to a few other scenes over the next 3 hours. The parrot body was feeling less weird as time passed.
It was during a scene on the deck, when Joel was trying to swoop to a perch, that he started to change back. He felt a sharp pain in his left wing as he landed and fell to the floor.
“It’s alright, Joel,” Bernard called out. “We can try it again.”
“Wait, something’s wrong.” John stooped down and carefully picked up the trembling Joel. His feathers had started disappearing. “I think he’s turning back.”
Turning back? It took a moment to remember what that meant. Joel had been having fun, learning basic flight.
Bernard paused for a moment, then nodded. “We can go on without him for today. Take him back to my office, if you would.”
Joel was carried back to the director’s office where he had first changed. John set him on the floor in the center of the room and quickly walked out.
The changes happened rapidly. His legs shot out, growing long. Feathers sucked back into his body, tail retracted. It felt weird as his beak disappeared, but it happened in seconds. Within a minute, he was human again.
He looked down at himself, somewhat surprised. Human again, just like Bernard promised. He flexed his hands and smiled.
“You done yet?” John’s voice called.
Joel nodded. “Yeah.” He quickly got dressed as John walked into the room. “That...man, that was...something.”
John nodded and smiled. “You make one helluva bird, definitely.” He gestured to the door. “Bernard said same time tomorrow. We’ll be filming more scenes for now, but we can do that without Polly. Take a break, you look tired.”
Joel nodded and headed for the door. “Thanks.”
“I’m looking forward to working with you again, Joel.”
That was by far one of the most bizarre days of his life. He turned into a bird and starred in a TV show, all in the same day. He was actually looking forward to being a bird again.
