______
It was a slow Wednesday at the mall. Most people were at work, which was the perfect time for Cherry to bum around the food court.
The short, pink-haired girl went to every free sample booth in sight, building an impressively tall stack of free food on a plate she bought from home. She was fresh out of college and very unemployed, so “Free Sample Wednesdays” were the closest thing to luxury she could afford. Maybe one day she’d be able to afford one of those fancy food plates, she joked to herself.
Cherry sat down at a table in the farthest corner of the food court, away from any peering eyes. While she technically did nothing wrong, she'd still get a look or two, and she really didn’t need that dampening her “Cherry-time.” While surveying the area, she spotted a purple haired girl scarfing down a burger. The girl’s eyes never left the table, so Cherry was content that her totally legal stunt went unnoticed. She began chowing down on her free sample casserole as an unwanted presence approached.
"Excuse me!"
A shrill screech pulled Cherry right out of her food induced trance. She looked up to see a woman with bright red hair in her mid-20s glaring down at her.
Cherry looked at the woman for a moment. She simply shrugged and went back to her meal. The rude lady, of course, screeched again.
"Miss!" The woman started, "employees shouldn't be eating out in the food court before lunch!"
"... excuse me?" Cherry looked back up, mouth agape. She was wearing her pink sundress and looked nothing like an employee of any store in a 200 mile radius.
"Well?" The woman continued. "Get me your manager so I can teach you a lesson!"
Cherry looked at the woman, completely dumbfounded by her stupidity. What did she expect her to do? Was she gonna go and convince a random manager to also get yelled at by this specimen?
In that moment, Cherry had an idea that would put the woman in her place.
"I'm very sorry ma'am," Cherry put on her best customer service voice and lied through her teeth. "Why don't you follow me to the back and we can get this straightened out immediately."
"Good! Even a stupid child like you knows how to do what she's told." The woman smirked as Cherry winced at the comment.
Cherry kept her cool though, and led the woman to a door marked "Employees Only." She surveyed the area, making sure no actual employees were around. Once she realized they were totally alone, Cherry gave the woman a devious grin.
"Well?!" The woman almost screamed. "Go get your manager!"
"I'm sorry, there was a mix up." Cherry smiled widely. "Don't you move a muscle and you'll get everything you deserve!"
Cherry flicked her finger and the rude lady froze in place.
"W-w-what's happening?!" The woman yelled. No matter how much she tried, her body just wouldn't respond.
"Oh shut up already!" Cherry snapped her finger and the lady's mouth was forced into a painted on smile.
The woman was so focused on trying to yell that she failed to notice her body changing. A plastic sheen engulfed her arms and worked its way up her legs. Her body began to simplify, becoming more toy-like by the second.
Cherry walked up to her and stretched the woman's arm out, forcing her to notice the changes. The lady began to panic as she felt the changes creep up her face. The plastic sheen enveloped her head, fixing her expression forward. Unable to even blink, the woman witnessed the room grow larger around her as she dwindled down to 5 inches in height. The rude woman could do nothing but scream mentally as she was reduced to a tiny collectable figurine.
Cherry smiled at her handy work. She picked her new toy up and brought it to eye level.
"By the way, I don't work here." She grinned widely and stuffed the newly made toy in her pocket. "Moron…"
Cherry turned around and came eye to eye with her worst fear: a witness.
The purple haired girl from the food court was standing in the doorway with a blank expression. She looked down at Cherry's pocket and then back at her face. She smirked, throwing Cherry for a loop.
Before any words could be said, Cherry flicked her finger and transformed the witness into a figurine as well. She stuffed the new toy in her other pocket and ran home in a panic, leaving her beloved casserole behind.
Cherry arrived home and set her newly made toys out on her desk. She stuck her tongue out at the rude lady, but couldn’t help but admire how adorable the purple-haired girl looked. She rubbed the purple-haired girl’s head. “Wish I could keep you like this…”
She spent a little while idly playing with her toys before she noticed the time. Seeing how close it was to the top of the hour, Cherry set the toys out on the ground and mentally prepared herself.
“Here it comes…” she sighed.
Once the clock hit the top of the hour, a poof of smoke surrounded the toys. In a moment, both girls were back in their original human bodies, completely taken aback.
Cherry stared at her newly freed victims. She went to redo her spell but was interrupted by the inevitable screech from the rude lady.
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME YOU UNGRATEFUL LITTL-” the rude lady was cut off mid way as Cherry flicked her finger and reduced her back into a toy.
“There’s no way I could stand hearing that again…” Cherry cringed, aggressively tossing the toy back onto her desk. “Now, for the other one…”
Cherry shuddered as she felt a pair of arms drape over her. She tried to move her finger, but quickly realized she was frozen in place.
“W-what’s going on?!” Cherry panicked. “Why can’t I move?!”
“You know,” the purple-haired girl took her arms off of Cherry and walked over to face her. “Turning a witch normal without a plan isn’t the smartest idea...”
“W-witch?” Cherry’s face grew pale. “Wait… y-you’re a witch?!”
“And it looks like you are too!” the purple-haired girl grinned. “Name’s Ellen! Who’re you?”
Cherry tried not to make eye contact with Ellen, refusing to answer. She was beyond embarrassed at her mix up. More importantly, however, she was furious that Ellen took away her sweet chance at revenge.
“Really, don’t wanna talk?” Ellen looked down. “I don’t bite!”
“You’re ruining my revenge, you stupid witch!” Cherry stuck her tongue out.
Ellen was more hurt than she’d like to admit. Almost instinctively, she booped Cherry’s nose and sent a bit of magic through the girl.
Cherry’s expression immediately fixed forward as her mouth was forced into a stitched on smile. An intense itch enveloped her body as pink faux fur covered every inch of it. Her hands and feet receded into her limbs, which rounded off into little stubs. Without support from her legs, Cherry fell backwards onto her back. It felt as though she'd landed on a cloud because her insides were swiftly being converted into stuffing, making her soft to the touch. Her ears rounded off and moved to the top of her head while her nose and eyes hardened into dark plastic. Her face grew out into a snout while a little poofy tail popped up on her rear. She shrunk down to a foot in size, finalizing her teddy bear transformation.
Cherry laid there, staring up at the ceiling. She couldn't move or blink, and she certainly couldn't express her immense dissatisfaction at the situation. In the corner of her eye, she could see as Ellen approached her.
Ellen grabbed Cherry and bought the teddy bear to eye level. She eyed Cherry up and down and pulled the bear into the tightest hug Ellen could muster, knocking the metaphorical air out of the little toy. Cherry was livid.
After getting her hugs out, Ellen set the bear down on the table and tapped its head. "Now, you're gonna tell me who you are." Ellen said, with a smirk on her face.
Cherry felt some magic course through her as Ellen tapped her. Remarkably, she could suddenly move her little bear body! Stumbling, Cherry stood on her stubby plush legs and looked up at her captor.
"I-I can move…" Cherry said, shocked to hear her own voice.
"Yes!” Ellen said excitedly. “Now who are you?”
"I'm not telling you anything, you damn witch!" Cherry yelled. She sprang into a tirade, saying meaner and meaner things as she got angrier and angrier.
Ellen just stared as Cherry roasted the witch. Once she finished her rant, Ellen tapped Cherry’s head and watched as the now inanimate bear flopped onto her face. Any relief Cherry felt from her tirade had been completely replaced with even more anger.
"Now, I'm going to let you speak again." Ellen said, holding back tears from the rant. "Tell me who you are or I'll force the information out of you."
Ellen tapped Cherry's head and watched as the bear stood back up.
"I already said I'm not telling you anyth-" Cherry flopped onto her back mid sentence, once again unable to move.
"Fine, guess you want me to force it out." Ellen sighed and picked Cherry up.
Cherry didn't believe Ellen's threat. She figured the witch would eventually give up and set her free. Cherry's faith started to waver when she felt Ellen tap her back. She felt something growing out of it… not a limb, but it was definitely something.
"Now, who are you?" Ellen giggled.
Cherry felt Ellen tug at the newly grown appendage, forcing her body to jerk back slightly. She felt it receding back into her, which set off some major red flags. Before she could really process what was going on, however, she felt an uncontrollable urge to speak.
"Hi! I'm Cherry-bear!"
Cherry didn't mean to say that, but that was undoubtedly her voice. At that moment, she realized the appendage in her back was a pull string, and she began to panic.
"Good toy~" Ellen smirked. "You could have avoided this if you'd just answered me earlier~"
Cherry couldn't even think before Ellen excitedly pulled the string again.
"Sorry owner! Cherry-bear is a bit of a dummy!"
Owner?! Cherry was absolutely livid. It was obvious Ellen was just playing with her now. The blatant disrespect made Cherry realize just how much of a toy she was to the witch.
"One more question…" Ellen put her finger on the pull-string ring. "Why did you turn us normal so soon?" Ellen pulled the string.
"Cherry-bear's magic only lasts an hour at a time!"
Ellen grinned and flipped the bear over to face her. Cherry felt a pit growing in her stomach.
"Well 'Cherry-bear', my magic has no time limit." Ellen hugged her tight and picked up the rude lady.
Cherry went into full panic mode. Was she going to be this witch's toy forever?! And why a teddy bear, of all things?!
Her gaze shifted downward as Ellen started to leave Cherry's apartment. "Come on little toys," Ellen started. "Let's go to your new home~"
Stacy was sitting on the couch, mindlessly watching whatever random show was on TV at the time. Her freelance for the day was done and Ellen was at the mall, so she was in relaxation heaven.
Well she was, until her roommate busted through the door.
"Stacy!!" Ellen yelled excitedly. "I'm home!!"
"I'm 10 feet away, you dork!" Stacy glared at Ellen, but let out a little chuckle anyway.. "I see your mall trip went well…" Stacy said, pointing to the toys in Ellen’s arms.
"Absolutely~" Ellen held Cherry out to Stacy and waved the bear's arm. "Cherry-bear, won’t you say hi to my roommate?" Ellen pulled the bear’s string.
"Hi Stacy! I'm Cherry-bear!"
Stacy stared blankly as the bear spoke to her. She blinked and then looked at Ellen. "Why did you give the poor thing a pull string? That seems extra cruel, even for you…"
Cherry mentally nodded in agreement.
"Hey, rude!" Ellen shot back. "This little toy here is a magic user, and she refused to talk to me, so..."
"A MAGIC USER?!" Stacy jumped up from her seat and grabbed Ellen’s hands. "You know how dangerous that is! You should have just let her be!"
"Relax~" Ellen said calmly. She grabbed Cherry's arm and pointed at Stacy, much to the bear's annoyance. "This little toy is harmless! Her magic only lasts an hour!"
Ellen laughed and hugged the bear. Cherry felt so belittled by the witch.
"An hour, huh…" Stacy pondered. "That's unusually weak… I mean, you can keep people transformed as long as you want!"
"Well," Ellen admitted, "she can use her power from a distance without a wand… so there’s that..."
"Oh…" Stacy sighed. "That makes a lot more sense…”
Ellen hugged her roommate. "Relax, I'll make sure she remains harmless~"
"A-are you going to keep her like that?" Stacy said, half-jokingly.
Cherry shuddered at the thought. You better not… she thought.
"Well…" Ellen held the bear up and squeezed her. "While I’m certainly tempted, I can’t leave her a toy forever… I do have another idea in mind though~"
"Oh… I don't like the sound of that at all…" Stacy said, sitting back down.
"It’ll be fine… probably~" Ellen said gleefully. She turned and started heading toward her room. "Now, I'll bug you in a bit~"
“Sure…” Stacy pulled out her phone and cancelled her plans for the day. "Might as well get ready for this nonsense…"
Ellen set the toys down on her desk.
"Okay Cherry-bear, I'm gonna let you move again." Ellen said with some caution in her voice. "You'd better not curse me out again or I might make this transformation permanent..."
Ellen tapped Cherry's head and the bear stood up.
"My name is Cherry! Not Cherry-bear!" The bear said in a cold tone. She was not at all pleased with Ellen, but she didn’t want to risk angering the witch anymore than she already had.
"You look like a bear to me." Ellen giggled.
Cherry waved her arms in rage. "ELLEN! Take this seriously!"
Ellen giggled some more. "Okay Cherry~”
"So, how're you going to make me harmless?" Cherry said in a serious tone. "I can just make you into a doll as soon as I'm normal and you know that."
"Fair point…" Ellen said, booping the bear's nose. "But, I think you'll wanna be my friend instead."
"Friend?!" Cherry got visibly upset. "You gave me a pull string and made me call you owner!! You're basically my enemy!"
"And right now, you're my toy~" Ellen playfully pushed Cherry onto her butt. "But if you become my friend, I can help make your magic last longer."
"Wait!" Cherry shot back up, her demeanor completely flipped. "Is that true?”
Ellen pulled her training wand out of her drawer. "I have one of these." She waved it around a little and set it down in front of the bear. "If you agree to work with me, I'll teach you how this works!"
The prospect of perfecting her own magic was too good to pass up. Without a trace of hesitation, Cherry nodded her head in approval.
Ellen smiled and tapped Cherry's head. A large poof of smoke enveloped the bear and Cherry emerged from it back in her human form.
"That happened so quick…" she said as she got her wits about her. "Warn me next time…"
"Aww, were you getting used to your body, Cherry-bear?" Ellen smirked as Cherry visibly cringed.
"Watch yourself, witch…"
There was a brief stare down between the two. And then, in the corner of her eye, Ellen saw another poof of smoke.
"YOU ASSHOLES!"
Cherry and Ellen turned their heads to see the rude woman yelling at them. The pair of witches looked at each other and smiled.
"Let's fix this problem for good~"
Stacy sat on the couch with the TV muted. The conversation in Ellen's room was intense enough to be its own soap opera. She shuddered when she heard an unknown woman screaming, and felt a pit in her stomach when the voice disappeared.
"Oh Stacy~" Ellen began, walking out of her room. "I want you to officially meet Cherry!"
Cherry smirked at Stacy. "Hi, I'm Cherry!" She waved her finger and Stacy froze in place. "It's great to meet you, Stacy-pup."
Stacy sighed when she realized she couldn't move an inch. She expected to start fluffing up immediately, but stood frozen as Ellen approached.
"Me and Cherry came to an agreement," Ellen said, sticking her hand out. "I hope you enjoy being a product of that!" She booped Stacy's nose, and watched the changes occur.
Stacy felt the magic run through her immediately. Her body blossomed a coat of faux fur that enveloped every inch of her. Her hands and feet reformed, fingers and toes merging and rounding off into oversized paws. A snout grew from her face as her nose hardened, taking on a slightly glossy sheen to give the impression of “wetness.” Her eyes hardened into plastic as her ears elongated and flopped out. She felt her tongue force itself out of her mouth and become felt, permanently sticking out of her stitched shut smile. Stitching ran alongside her body as it filled with soft fluff. Finally, she shrunk down to a foot in height, leaving a tiny plush pup where Stacy once stood.
Ellen picked the pup up and squeezed her tight.
"Two for two," Cherry said. "This might be a good idea after all!"
"Definitely~" Ellen said, petting her Stacy-pup.
Stacy sighed internally. At least things were going to be interesting.
