One thing I learned a long time ago is that if someone has had a few too many they can sometimes be manipulated into giving information they wouldn't normally give. By having Michael talk faster than Raul can think, Michael didn't give him a chance to realize that he didn't know Michael. It also allowed him to learn as much about Raul as possible including his work experience.
I gotta admit, you really had me sitting back and going, "Now WHY in the HELL would Michael try to intercept what was going on, esp. given the real motivation of he and Amanda's going to that particular restaurant, and his plans on proposing to her? Last thing I would've expected him to do is do that! Now, had Raul actually been holding/restraining (ie, 'Assaulting' that poor waitress, then sure!).
Again, his getting to know all the folks in his business/friends circles, aids him (And kept Raul outta the I.C.U., too!), and others, due to him being such a good hearted person!
Who said Chivalry's dead?
