Viktor found himself trying to adjust to his new work environment. He hadn’t moved or anything, it was simply strange constantly having someone around to keep him company. Ever since he had rescued Markus, the young man picked up the habit of showing up at the Machine Herald’s door, inviting himself inside and questioning Viktor about various inventions.

Viktor simply wasn’t used to people showing genuine interest in his work and thus chose to tolerate the interruptions, even if they did have a bit of a negative effect on his productivity. A small part of him, the tiny bit of humanity that had not quite yet been extinguished, actually welcomed the peculiar interactions.

“Markus, are you certain this is necessary?” Viktor sighed, gazing at himself in the mirror, wearing possibly the most ridiculous accessory he had ever had the misfortune of laying his eyes upon.

“Aww… C’mon! You look so cute with these on!” A pleased, gleeful giggle sounded from the young man.

“I do not understand how this-“

The sound of a boiling kettle cut the scientist’s words off as Markus perked up. “Oh there it is!” Brushing his finger against one of the cat ears with a chuckle, Markus dashed off towards the kitchen. “Do you want anything to go with tea?”

Viktor shook his head for a moment, it’s been years since he’d actually bothered to prepare anything more than simple meals that would provide him with basic nutrition, but having Markus around reminded of the small joys of food with actual taste to it.

“We’ve still got some cake from yesterday!”

“That…” Viktor called out. “Will do…”
