Michael sighed as he looked over the after-action report of the last mission. He has seen it at least a hundred times but couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. One image in particular really piqued his interest. Bodies. Five piles of bodies in different areas of the building’s atrium. They stumbled upon the gruesome sight shortly after they cleared all the demons in the area of operation.
‘There’s nothing else in there besides those piles. So what the hell were they doing..,’ he thought. He gave a small groan, breaking the silence of his own office. As if on cue, the door slid open, catching him off guard. He looked up to see his old friend, and second in command, Rex. His expression grim.
“I’m not used to seeing you this serious. Bad news, I take it?” Michael started, his eyes drifting to the folder in Rex’s hand. Rex took a deep breath as he stepped in the office. “Yeah..One of the drones surveying the area for energy spikes found something a tad more interesting.” He walked over to Michael’s desk and set the folder on it. Michael stared at him for a moment before turning his attention to the folder. Upon opening it, he found himself taken aback. Inside, were hi-res images of bodies. Piles of them yet again. “No…Again..?”
Rex didn’t bother answering the question. What could he say? He knew just as much as Michael. Little to none. Michael looked over the images a bit more, comparing them to the ones from the after-action report. It wasn’t long before he closed the folder, a small sigh escaping his lips. “What are we doing about this,” He asked. “We sent a team out thirty minutes ago to investigate. Expecting word back from them in about an hour.”
“Good. I want a full-“ Before he could finish his statement, his phone started ringing. He picked it up to look at the caller ID, only to answer it a split second later. “Mr. Graves, what’s up?” He was silent for a couple minutes while he listened to what is old teacher had to say. “I see. I’ll be there in fifteen.” He hung up the phone and looked over to Rex. “I have to go. Kavi got into a fight,” He said as he got up.
“Not a problem. I’ll keep you updated. Tell the little rascal I said “hi.” With that, Rex walked out of the room before Michael could say another word. Michael left his office soon after and rushed down the hall.

Kavi sat outside the principal’s office, eyes downcast. While he expected the outcome from the moment the fight started, it didn’t make him feel any better about the situation. All around him he could hear the disapproving whispers. Feel the needle-like glares. If it weren’t for Mr. Graves, his pre-algebra teacher being there with him, he thought he may have broken down and run away.
The young wolf folded his ears back when another familiar face walked in. His brother arrived after what felt like an eternity. Mr. Graves stood up to greet him, but he wasn’t really paying attention to the conversation they were having after. Mainly because he knew what they were talking about. A few agonizing minutes later, his brother kneeled in front of him. Kavi looked up for a moment before averting his gaze. “I’m sorry Michael..” he mumbled. Before he could continue the long winded apology he had planned, Michael placed a hand on his head.
“You did good, Kavi. Everything is going to be alright.” The wolf turned his head to see a reassuring smile spread across his brother’s lips. A small nod was all he could muster up as a reply. The hand drew away as Michael stood up and moved to the door. He went to knock, but hesitated. Kavi looked over just as Michael sighed and turned around. “Would you like to come in with me?” For a moment, Kavi just stared. Half from shock, and the other from anxiety welling up in the pit of his gut. He forced himself to get up as Michael opened the door, walking into the office behind him.
The atmosphere seemed to tense as the door closed behind him. Inside there were three people waiting. An adult male and female Kavi didn’t know, and Principal Bradley. The wolf gave a small whine before quickly taking a seat in the corner of the office.
“Hm. Nice of you to join us, Mr. Luxen,” Bradley began, “Now that we’re all here, we can begin. As I’m sure you were told over the phone, Kavi and Mason had an..altercation a little while ago. One in which sent Mason to the hospital. His sister says he has yet to wake up. “ He looked at the parents of Mason, and then to Michael before continuing.
“Mr. And Mrs. Johnson are very adamant about pressing charges. I-" He was cut off by Mrs. Johnson slamming her hand on his desk. “That little monster almost killed my baby,” she screeched, “What else do we have to talk about!?”
The room went silent for what seemed like ages. Kavi swallowed hard. He knew he messed up, but he wanted to say she was wrong. He battled with himself over it for a bit. When he was finally ready to speak his mind, Michael stepped forward. He couldn’t see it clearly, but Kavi was sure Michael glared at Mason's mother.
“Mr. Bradley, while it probably doesn’t mean much at this point, I’ve spoken to the school on multiple occasions about Kavi being bullied by a number of students, Mason included, because of his species,” He stated. “It doesn’t seem as if the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Wouldn’t it be highly plausible to say that Kavi was defending himself?”
The young wolf’s ears perked up a bit. He looked back and forth between Michael and Principal Bradley while he waited for his answer. To his surprise, the Principal clasped his hands together and nodded. Before they could continue, however, a knock came at the door. Mr. Graves walked in with a small device in hand.
“Excuse me for interrupting,” Graves said. “But the evidence is undeniable that Kavi wasn’t in the wrong.” Mrs. Johnson looked like she was about to explode. Graves ignored that fact and turned out the lights, activated the device in his hand. A bright light projected upward, showing the schoolyard and four people. Mason and two of his friends, and Kavi. “This is just one of the camera angles from the yard. As you can see, Mason and his friend’s have back Kavi here into a corner.” Everyone’s eyes were now glued to the projected video.
“L-leave me alone. I didn’t do anything to you,” yelled the Kavi in the video. Mason chuckled a bit, brandishing a pair of scissors. “Come on man. Just a little off the top. Maybe then you’ll start looking a little more like us,” he sneered.
His friends laughed, one of them cracking a joke about him just being a naked dog without his fur. Mason’s cohorts finished up their little laugh fest, closing in on Kavi quickly and grabbing his arms. “It’ll be fine, right? Don’t you wanna be a human?” One said. “sit still, will ya,” the other grunted, landing a punch in Kavi’s gut. This time it was Michael’s turn to be angry. Though he didn’t really give any signal other than a quiet grunt.
Mason walked forward and took a handful of fur on the top of Kavi's head. “Now hold still or you’re gonna get cut,” Mason sang out, moving the scissors towards the base of the fur. “N-no! Stop it,” Kavi yelled. He could see someone in the distance past Mason, but they ran off before he could call for help. Kavi looked like he was out of options. All but one, that is. Kavi swallowed just as Mason was about to start cutting. He then yanked his head down, following up with a swift knee in one of his captors’ stomach. They let go, holding their stomach as they gave a small groan.
Kavi took the opportunity, bringing his leg back down so that his boot would slam into the others shin and used his hand to grab Mason’s wrist. When his other arm was free, he grabbed Mason by the shirt and ducked down, flipping the boy over his back and onto the ground on the other side of him. This would elicit a small smile from Michael as he watched the projection. Kavi had been taking his training seriously, and used it when he needed to. On screen, Kavi gave a small sigh. Upon hearing yelling, he’d looked behind him to see two security guards and the kid from earlier rushing towards the scene. They moved him back and looked over the hurt students. When they looked at Mason, everyone in the room could hear them say that the boy was out cold.
Mr. Graves ended the recording there, due to everyone in the room knowing what came after. “As you can see, Kavi was not unprovoked in his actions,” He stated. “And I’m sure, if this were to go to court, it’d most likely get dismissed due to the nature of the situation. Mason is not badly injured, though he may have a bit of a concussion.” He looked over to the parents, eyes almost uncaring. “I do suggest keeping a better handle on your child though, so that these things do happen in the future.”
Bradley cleared his throat to gather the attention of everyone in the room. He clasped his hands together before speaking. “I’m no judge, but given what we just saw, Kavi is not in the wrong. Mason, and his friends could easily be expelled for this. However, I believe that one week’s suspension, effective immediately, should be enough for the now. That being said, my decision is unbiased by the way a person looks. Saying this to stave off any wild fantasies anyone in the room may have. If Kavi had been the cause of this altercation, my decision probably would have been the same. “ He gave a deep sigh, continuing on. “If this were to happen again, the punishment will not be so lenient. Am I understood.”
“Loud and clear Principal,” Michael said, almost immediately. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson didn’t even give a verbal response. They just nodded. Kavi was amazed. Even with what seemed like everything stacked against him, his teacher and his brother made rather quick work of all this. “Very well then. Michael, you and Kavi are free to go. You already know the drill,” Bradley said as he motioned for the door. “Graves, I’m going to need you to stay behind while we talk with the parents about options.”
With that, Michael nodded, walking over to Kavi and giving him another gentle pat. This snapped Kavi from his small trance to look up at his brother. “Let’s go bud. First time so I’ll explain everything to you tonight.” Kavi nodded and stood up. They both left the office and closed the door behind him. Once again, Kavi felt like lasers were ripping into him as he went out into the main office. Michael seemed to notice this and placed his hand on Kavi’s shoulder. Kavi gave a small smile as they headed out. It didn’t take too long for them to get to the car, and leave the school. He wasn’t really sure how things were going to go that night, but he took it that he might be staying with his uncle again for the time being. Just until things cleared up. He was just happy not to be expelled after all.
Michael was already busy calling ahead to let him know. Just as they’d arrived there after the short drive, however, Michael’s phone began ringing again. He already knew what it was for. Work. Michael was always busy keeping the cities in the surrounding areas secure, much like their own. As proud as that made Kavi, he couldn’t help but to give Michael a forlorn look before heading inside. His uncle stayed outside for a bit longer, striking up conversation with Michael with what was no doubt about the organization he was once a part of. He soon headed inside and Michael took off in the car. Kavi stared out the window as he left. “Be safe, Michael..” The young wolf said quietly.
