Sebastian and I stepped out into the Great Hall, the white fluorescent lights bathing the room in a pale, sterile light. “How do we get water to her?” I asked.
Sebastian looked around the room as he took a step back to stretch his limbs and wings. With a snap, “Got it. We’ll just order water bottles and fill them up.” He pointed to the kiosk terminal I had used to order my grooming kit.
“Gotcha.” We walked over to the kiosk and each ordered the largest water bottle we could find, a 1 gallon sized water bottle. I ordered a deep blue one while Sebastian selected a bright, almost pastel, purple one.
Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long. The bottles were delivered to our rooms in no time. We decided to split up and reconvene at Julia’s room. I picked up my water bottle and filled it up as much as it could be and proceeded to the neighboring wolverine dorms.
I beat Sebastian and waited by the door for him before entering into the room together. Closing the door behind us, we greeted Julia and handed off our water bottles.
“So…” I paused as she began to guzzle water from the purple bottle. “You said that you’d explain things more. What’s your deal?”
Julia removed herself from the bottle with a satisfied ‘ah!’ before lying up against the empty desk. “Where do I begin?” She started. “Ah, so you guys remember about Intramorph’s Project S?” We nodded. “Well, once Intramorph’s idea for human genetic alteration got off the ground with that project, the company grew and with it became big headed.
“The company grew quickly and bought out several other companies, especially ones from the agricultural industry. With the power to alter life itself, the heads of Intramorph grew into this kind of god complex where everything is beneath them.
“So now that Project Corse is nearly ready to launch, they’ve found a way to further divide themselves from the people.” She paused for another large gulp of water. “The leaders and to a lesser extent low level workers see you subjects as less than human despite your sentience.
“There is a third phase to Project Corse. Intramorph plans to make all employees beast people.”
“I don’t exactly see how that would be bad.” Sebastian asked as he looked over his own body and shook his wings.
“The problem is,” Julia retorted, “that most existing workers don’t want to become beast people. In my research, Intramorph plans to fire ALL workers below the board of directors who refuse to comply and effectively reset all wages for whoever is left, back to minimum wage.”
“But if they fire that many people, how is the company supposed to run without workers?” I asked.
“Because,” she lowered her head, “they are using you, all of the existing test subjects, to fill in the gap that Intramorph predicts will be left after all of the firing.” She drank more water, nearly finishing the first bottle we brought her. “Intramorph is banking on the extreme likelihood that most if not all test subjects remain within their walls to work, starting at minimum wage.”
Sebastian and I looked at each other. “What about the animal cities that they’re building?” Sebastian asked.
“Those are just supposed to be fortresses, fortresses to keep subjects in and boost production of products for Intramorph.”
I looked down at my new paws and claws. Would I ever be allowed outside to meet my family? How tight of a grip does Intramorph have on us? “How are we supposed to live in a world like that?” I asked.
Julia looked down, drank the last of the first bottle, and said, “It’s not a world worth living in. That’s why I was fighting and searching for ways to protect you all as much as I could.” She paused a moment, “But I don’t have that power anymore. My position wasn’t anywhere near high enough to do any major, lasting change.” Her gaze fell further.
I stepped forward and sat beside her. “That’s okay. Is there anything that we can do or work on that could minimize the possibility of that grim future from happening?”
She shook her head, “Not that I’m aware of. The only thing I would consider helpful is if test subjects were free in the outside world, outside Intramorph, and doing the groundwork for social help to take down Intramorph’s grip on beast people.”
“Wow,” I gawked. How were we supposed to get free of Intramorph?
After a long pause, Sebastian spoke up, “Julia, you’re looking better than before.” Julia’s skin had regained a level of plumpness, but her limbs remained thin. He turned to me. “We have to find a way to bring her some actual food. She needs some meat on her bones.”
I nodded, “right, but how are we supposed to smuggle food out here?”
“I know,” Julia cut in. “The rec-area here has a kitchen. If you guys know anyone who can cook, you could get them to make me some food.”
“Ah,” I said. After a moment I snapped my fingers, “I got it! My mentor, Fynn has a knack for making food! I’ll talk to him and get him to cook up something good for you, Julia!”
The woman smiled. “Thank you.”
Sebastian checked his watch. “We gotta head out, Ryker. I’ll grab my water bottle and bring it back later for you, Julia.” And just like that he snatched the bottle and stepped through the door.
“See you later, Jules.” I called as I stepped through the door.
I texted Fynn on my watch and set a time to meet up in the rec room after asking him to make something high in protein. After lunch, I met up with Fynn who had brought a very large bucket of protein powder.
“Hey, Fynn!” I called, stepping into the commercial-style kitchen.
“Hey Ryker!” He replied. He motioned to where he had set up ingredients for some recipe. “I know you said you wanted me to make something high in protein, but baking is more my speed.” He motioned to the assortments of ingredients and bowls. “I want you to help me make my protein cookies. I’ve made a few batches here and there for Asher.” He plopped his hands on the counter. “I know that this isn’t going to just be for you, so who is this for?”
I leaned in with a hushed voice. “You know the rumor about weird noises from our adjacent wolverine dorms?”
“Yeah?”
“Well, they’re true. There’s a woman in there who needs food. She used to work for Intramorph, but is hiding out there because she couldn’t keep working for them.” I paused a moment, “Intramorph isn’t what it seems.”
“Really?”
“I think Julia could explain it better, she’s on the first floor.”
“Gotcha, I’ll have to check it out sometime.” He pulled over a large bowl and a few bananas. “Could you mash these for me while I measure out the rest of the ingredients we’ll need?” I nodded and started to mash the bananas in the bowl with a nearby masher.
After I was done, Fynn handed me a rubber spatula and a measuring cup of crunchy peanut butter. I grabbed a large hand mixer for guys my size and started mixing. Later, Fynn added protein powder and some oats.
“Now for my special ingredient to crisp up these cookies!” Fynn said coyly. He winked and added a few tablespoons of sugar. I started to scoop out balls of dough and handed them to him one-by-one to roll in brown sugar. He then placed cookies out on a very large baking sheet. Soon he shoved the tray into the hot oven and set a timer on it.
A few minutes later, 2 dozen peanut butter protein cookies popped out of the oven. We transferred them to a wire rack to cool and got a second tray with 1 more dozen cookies on it.
Once everything was baked, washed, and cooled, Fynn bagged up 2 and a half dozen cookies in one bag and the rest into another, much smaller, bag. “This one,” Fynn pointed to the smaller bag, “is just for you. Next time we make another protein cookie, I wanna try some different ingredients and experiment!”
I smiled back and thanked him for his help. I decided to stop by my room and drop off my personal cookies before delivering the rest to Julia.
Sebastian had already returned with a fresh water bottle and left. The water bottle that I had loaned Julia was almost empty, but still plenty left.
“Hi, Julia!” I called as I handed her the bag. “My boyfriend and I made these protein cookies for you!” I rubbed the back of my neck. “I never knew this was a thing before today, so they might not be great?”
Julia nodded and took a careful bite from one of the cookies. In an instant, her face melted into a contented smile, the kind you have when you flash back to an amazingly happy childhood moment. She quickly returned to herself and finished the cookie, eating another before setting the bag aside. “Those are delicious! What’s in them?”
I searched my memory for the ingredients. “Uh, bananas, peanut butter, oats…protein powder, and… a little bit of sugar, both inside and out!”
She smiled and reached out for a hug. I complied. “Thank you, Ryker.” She gripped me tighter, eventually reaching to scratch my lower back, around my lumbar region.
Instantly, my body reacted in a way I never knew it could. My tail started lightly thumping the floor and my leg began twitching. My ears folded back as I enjoyed the good boy scratch.
Before I knew it, she had stopped holding back a fit of laughter and my lupine mannerisms. Her pale face flushed into a hot pink before releasing a hearty belly laugh.
She covered her mouth with her hand to muffle the sound, her face getting redder with each burst. Eventually, she started to die down her laughter and recomposed herself. “Hah, I never noticed how much genetic memory you subjects received. I’m not sure anyone has tested it before, but my God is it cute!”
She started to giggle again, but her face didn’t turn red with laughter this time. She stood up from her spot and patted me on the back. “Thank you, Ryker!”
My watch chimed with a new message. ‘New Guys’ Meeting tonight. Bring your mentors. 8 PM in the Rec Room. –Sebastian

Ooh, could I be there? Basically, I would be becoming a spider-ringtail taur with four arms on the upper torso with the second set about halfway down. There would be two smaller eyes above and to the side of my normal ones in the forehead and two even smaller ones in the side of my head, and to complete the part-jumping-spider deal, there would be spinnerets where the two torsos meet on the underside.
(So mostly a ringtail taur, but with some jumping spider features. )

Hmmm... It'd have to be a fresh experiment in the existing logic of this world...
Hmmm....
I'd have to establish quadrupedal beast people, insectoid and arachnid genetic experiments and possibly taxedermal surgeries...
What if a series of Halloween shorts within Intramorph underbelly?
Man, now that it's popped into my head, this is the direction I want!
Maybe releasing it as a subseries of Tales from Intramorph...
....

....
Anyway, any early thoughts on book 2's first chapter?

"Mwahahahahahaaa....."
In a dark room, a figure lies naked on the cold concrete floor. A door opens, the only source of light in this room for days.
Two figures walk in. The click of a switch and the abandoned body is bathed in the cold light of a single head lamp.
"I see subject subject R.A.T is just about ready to begin." The man with the lamp growled. "Assistant E., take the subject to my lab and prep him for the procedure."
"Yes, Doctor Z.-- I mean Dr. Omega."
Omegas eyes flashed with maniacle rage. " Never will you use that tongue to reveal my identity!" In a flash, the doctor whipped out a pair of razor sharp scissors, yanking the assistant's fragile tongue from it's wet cocoon. He lined up the blades with one hand, holding the tongue with the other, and glaring into the streaming eyes of the assistant.
"Muh! Pweth donth!" He cried.
Omega's eyes narrowed and purged the tongue. The article fell to the floor with a wet splat, blood quickly pooling around it like hot fudge on a sundae.
The 'subject' stared at the lost piece, eyes wide with horror yet also craving food, food that had denied the 'subject' for what seemed like weeks.
The doctor turned to the door, "Subject, you may eat this hapless morsel."
In an instance, the deprived figure lunged at the discarded tissue, swallowing it whole.
Omega turned to the assistant, "Now, will you prep the subject quickly? Afterwards we can discuss the intricacies of a new sense of taste.
Omega stepped across the threshold and slammed the door behind him.
A great way to release the inner psychopath and explore some spooky season ideas! 😈😈😈

I mean, ringtails may be cute, but that innocent face hides a brutal hunter. (Kind of like the quiet kid, if you know what I mean. ) They didn't earn the name of ring-tailed cats for nothing if you consider how a cat hunts and that the miners considered Bassariscus astutus to be exceptional and remarkable versions of our four-legged overlords.
Haha! I'll have to dive into some more research on that , especially the miner thing! It sounds interesting!
In the mean time, I've got some writing to get done this month! With the overall plot of book 2 completed, including some stuff beyond Ryker's perspective! So stay tuned for a few more Tales from Intramorph as the story progresses. Although, I'm debating about when I should release one of them due to what's supposed to be in it...
I'll figure it out! Regardless the earliest time I'd consider releasing it would be after chapter 3 or until a specific plot point happens in Ryker's perspective in, like, the third act as it were...
Anyway, I should get cracking on chapter 2! Gotta dream up some character descriptions for a batch of new characters!
