Another submission for the
Thursday_Prompt with the prompt this week being sketch. This one is shorter than my normal stories and I'm not the most confident on it, but I hope that everyone who reads it enjoys it. If you have any advice, please let me know and I appreciate those who take the time to read this!
A Sketchy Situation
By: Rando Shywoulfe
"Hey there! I know someone like you would enjoy a sketch of yourself."
Jensen paused at the sound of the voice. The fox had been on his usual walk through the park, enjoying the smells of flowers and fresh dew that surrounded him on his peaceful stroll. However, the voice disturbed that sense of quiet, and he was a little annoyed with that. After searching a bit, he found a small table set up just off the path. A sketchbook and a couple of drawing pencils lay on top of the table’s surface. Sitting behind it on a foldable chair was a weasel who looked at him with a huge grin. Looking around and seeing no one else the weasel could've been referring to, Jensen approached the table.
"What makes you say that?" Jensen said, the suspicion clear in his voice.
Kane continued smiling despite the other's hesitation. "Well, who wouldn't love a drawing of themselves? I mean, it’s art of yourself after all!”
Jensen put a paw to his chin and considered it for a moment. “True. Though, may I ask what you’re doing out here?”
The weasel shrugged. “What can I say? The fresh air stimulates my creative juices. Plus, kind of hard to sell sketches of furs from inside my house.”
“Good point. All right, what’s your price, uhhh…” Jensen stumbled, realizing he didn’t know the weasel’s name.
The weasel didn’t seem phased in the slightest by this blunder. “Name’s Kane, and I thought you’d never ask!” Kane then grabbed a drawing pencil and started tapping it, the faint smell of lead coming off of it. “One sketch is gonna cost twenty dollars. Which, let me tell you,” he then leaned closer to Jensen, like he was exposing some sort of secret, “is one hell of a steal!”
Nodding in agreement, Jensen reached a paw into a pocket of his jeans and pulled out a wallet. He took out a twenty-dollar bill and laid it down on the table in front of Kane.
Taking the bill and stuffing it in his own pocket, Kane flashed him a wide smile. “Awesome! Just stand there for a couple of minutes and I’ll give you your self-portrait in a jiffy!”
He began drawing, his pencil making slow marks on the drawing paper. His eyes remained fixed to the page except for a few brief seconds whenever he had to look up at his muse. Jensen tried his best not to move an inch but found himself getting restless as more time passed. After what seemed like forever, Kane set his pencil down and ripped the page out of his sketchbook.
“Here you go, one sketch from yours truly.” Kane then handed Jensen the sheet face down, a look of pride visible on the weasel's face.
When Jensen picked it up and looked at it, he was shocked at the quality. The face was nothing more than a lopsided circle, and the muzzle jutted out from the side like an ice cream cone. One ear was shorter than the other and the eyes were just black dots. However, that was nothing compared to the body. It was simply multiple lines connecting the head to other lines with a few smaller circles at the end to represent paws. It was something anyone with paper and pencil could’ve drawn.
Jensen could tell he'd been had. "Hold up just a minute! You scammed me! I didn't pay twenty dollars for this half-baked attempt at a drawing."
Kane had been leaning back in his chair, but after hearing the fox's complaint, he sat back up and shrugged. "Actually, you did."
"Excuse me!?" Jensen could hear the shock and anger in his voice.
Without flinching, Kane crossed his paws and a small smirk played on his muzzle. “Well, I told you for twenty bucks, that I'd draw a sketch of you, correct?"
Not sure where this was going, Jensen just nodded.
“Well,” and here, Kane's smirk grew even wider, “I never said it would be a good sketch."
