Red joins the Civilian Conservation Corps' labor force and takes to the woods to help construct trails and parks. With his trusty crosscut saw and his fashionable suspenders, he's working those Depression blues away.
The CCC laid the foundation for several volunteer conservation crews that survive today within the US. I worked on a few in the past and the US Forest Service and the National Park Service owe a huge debt to the CCC as they established thousands of miles of hiking trails and the infrastructure for visitors to enjoy those national forests and parks those workers labored in.
