I know different stories have different variations of the same concept, but I always liked the idea of dragons always stealing gold because they NEED gold to survive. Like its a dietary supplement or they passively absorb it to continue growing/living. Raiding cities and setting things on fire is just their way of getting said gold in the most efficient manner.
