Nice! Been a while since you posted, but this story was definitely worth the wait!
Out of curiosity, it looks like they're training on the spaceship equivalent of a fast battleship, given the apparent multitude of guns, the powerful shields and the high speeds to make a jolt. Is AGATE more military-focused?

There'll be more art soon!
It's a simulation, not an active ship, but I guess I didn't give too much thought to what kind of ship they'd be simulating.
AGATE stands for "Accelerated Gmelin Academic and Tactical Education" is basically a military academy for Terra Buteo. Very prestigious, very hardcore. There are a few goals. First and foremost, it's to keep privileged kids privileged by putting them through a sort of equivalent of Battle School from Ender's Game. (Yes, the author is nuts, but it was a core inspiration for the project so I'll at least give passing mention). That said, it's also a way to get a 'leg up' for less prestigious families, in the event AGATE has spare capacity for students. Second, it's to churn out extremely competent to hypercompetent specialists in a number of fields. Aside the occasional Psion, AGATE has three main 'tracks'. Military, Technical, and Scientific. Vershaft is focused mainly on the Technical track, and later in the canon becomes a Starship officer, but you have to dip into all three to graduate.
One thing notable is that due to the intense pressure situation at AGATE, most if not all graduates come out at least a bit whacked in the head, with various psychological quirks.
