Arcane Rangers"There is nothing more horrifying than seeing a man, whose entire life had built him up as a warrior, suddenly burst into blue flames inside his own armor and turn to dust right before your very eyes." -Besieging Curdan GeneralThe prevalence of magic in elvish culture and warfare is like an addiction. Enchanted weapons, magically made armor, and even gear which is crafted with special care by powerful mages to make soldiers more comfortable. However, magic is not always useful in war, as the endless dispelling of it can annoy any war wizard. It is why many societies in Faian adopt warrior mages or focus on enchantments, as such things are wasteful to try to dispel and are more mobile. The use of overly enchanted gear was mixed into the elven love of archery, thus building the order of Arcane Rangers, a tradition of elven warfare which dates as far back as the elven empire.
Arcane Rangers are one woman armies, whose gear is deeply dangerous. The bows, arrows, and weapons of the ranger are molded from vats of metals which are infused with raw liquid made from magic infused smelters. The blue metal is crystal like, and it must be molded by both an experienced smith with a mage to assist them. These weapons take years to make and perfect, a single arrow taking half of year of hard work. Yet, once crafted, these weapons are devastating to use. Most arrows can be fired that upon contact will pierce most armors, and those it hits explode into blue flames. The magic side each arrow is immense, as if mismanaged can lead to a swift but painful demise. Experienced arcane archers can even hold back their bows long enough to ignite their arrows before unleashing their volley, creating various deadly effects from explosions to turning their foe into a withered abomination.
Most rangers were trained far before their coming into the havens, and few ever take apprentices. Most arcane archers spent decades learning how to use and maintain their weapons, and many distrust the sons and daughters of servants and nobles to take their arts seriously. Most rangers had once been patrol officers, who kept order in the rural country of the empire, and were highly capable nuisances to those who had to fight them. A rare few are mages themselves. Although most are family of powerful nobles, most live alongside the soldiers and are friendly with the Reformed Army, as their view of the decadence which led to the doom of their empire has long been a point of conflict.
