Roasarch Religion"I must admit, it was terrifying at first. The Roach Man accused of murder was brought into the deeper swamps to an ancient tomb which looked almost abandoned. From it came out one of their 'elders' I could only describe. A gaunt and skeletal figure almost, adorned with all manner of finery decayed in time. His head was covered in a wreath of ancient flowers, and one of his arms was missing and replaced with a water logged wooden replacement. When told of what had happened, this creature snapped his fingers and the murderer was consumed in black and purple flame, and was naught but ash. The being returned to its tomb, as if annoyed to having been disturbed." -Rosari Account of a Roasarch LichThe connection between the Roasarch and the Kerks is that both used to worship the same gods, up until the Kerks embraced Illumination. Like the Kerks, the Roasarch worshipped the gods of the mountains, rivers, and forests and followed their creeds. The Roasarch were only slightly more secular than the Kerks, and did not build tomb cities as much as lived in them. Their hive-like cities often contained their generational dead, held in catacombs beneath them or in specialized lakes for which became sacred burial grounds. The Roasarch sent away their young mages to be tutored by their priests, living in hermit huts across the realm and joined a unique hive mind which catered purely to the priests. Mages and priests were often one in the same, and were more like wise men who taught the religion to the clans and performed basic rites before moving on.
In ancient days, after the fall of the elves, they were visited by a mighty necromancer of the pagan Kerks. This was Mel Coldfinger, accursed and curser, the First Lich of Kerkia. By studying the ancient histories in the capital of Roasam, Mel gifted upon them Roasarch the secrets of lichcraft, and it would transform the society of the Roasarch. Roasarch are already immortal, but to capable of living beyond even death, many of the Roasarch priests embraced lichcraft to keep themselves incapable of being truly destroyed. Roasarch liches are unique to many others, who don't decay at the normal rate or even in the same capacity. Using magic, many liches hold onto their skeletal forms in order retain their ability to cast spells. Roasarch liches regenerate themselves, retaining most of their flesh, as lichcraft when performed on them often results in them losing limbs, a horrible fate they learned a bit too late when the liches began to use their new spell craft in bulk.
To this end, most Roasarch Liches are sleepers and are deeply venerated. Most live within an area of their own burial place, where they arise to perform religious rites and give wisdom to Roasarch who seek them out. Many who had gone through the process of becoming a lich had been given vain burials, which is why many still retain a sense of decaying nobility. In times of war, these liches are called upon to defend their home and use their spells against Roasam's foes. Many specialize in the spell craft of evocation and enchantment, capable of 'blessing' the arms and armor of Roach Men warriors. Yet, most prefer to stay in their tombs and conduct their rituals in peace, constantly trying to stave off the decay as best they can. The passiveness of Roasarch liches is almost legendary, so much so that even ancient liches trapped in occupied territories are often left alone.
