Book 1: The Fear Ripper
Chapter 1: The birth of evil
Part 6: The New Guardian of Fire
A good two hours passed while the group of heroes napped following their eventful night with Ignitus, who had summoned them, and their turbulent arrival in Warfang about the threat to the city.
Hunter and the three sages were finishing up the agreements of responsibilities and preparations for the ceremony for Spyro to become the new fire keeper.
"Hunter, can you go get our guests please? We are ready." Terrador asked the cheetahs.
"Of course master Terrador." Hunter replied under the thanks of the earth sage, and began to walk back to the guest rooms where the group was resting.
He passed by the same road he had taken with the dragons, seeing the dragonfly sleeping on a branch, its belly a little swollen. Hunter smiled, thinking that the little creature must have had a little feast. The cheetah approached Sparx gently and tapped him gently with his fingertip to wake him up. The latter opened his eyes and was startled when he saw Hunter's big nose and flew away buzzing, threatening the cheetah with his little fists.
"Relax Sparx, I wanted to warn you that I'm going to get Spyro, Flame and their friends. Everything is ready."
The dragonfly calmed down and followed Hunter, buzzing a little. They arrived at the door of the three dragons and knocked gently.
Ashes woke up, still on Cynder who moved her head, followed by Ember who straightened up as she stretched. Panic-stricken, she withdrew from Cynder, blushing, not out of shame, but out of shyness at exposing her unofficial relationship with the dragoness. Cynder stood up smiling at Ashes and whispered to her.
"It will be our secret until you feel ready my beautiful." Said Cynder affectionately in Ashes' ear, understanding that she needed time.
Ashes smiled widely at Cynder in thanks for being so understanding. Ember rubbed her eyes, moistening her dry tongue.
"Hi girls. Did someone knock?" Ember asked still slurred.
"I think so... I'll go check." Cynder went to the door and opened it, seeing Hunter and Sparx.
"Excuse me for disturbing you Cynder, but the wise men are ready to lay out the conditions and proceed with the ceremony." Hunter explained, sorry for waking them up.
"That's okay Hunter, thanks for letting us know. We're on our way." Hunter nodded at Cynder who gently closed the door, and the cheetah walked over to the two dragons' room and knocked in the same way.
Flame and Spyro had rolled around a bit in their sleep, and were flanked by each other, still stuck together. The purple dragon woke up first and went to the door, Flame still asleep, even though he was fidgeting a bit, not feeling Spyro's warm body against him anymore.
"Forgive me Spyro, the time has come my friend." Hunter explained again.
"Alright, I'll go wake up Flame. I'll be right back."
Spyro left the door ajar and went back to where they had fallen asleep, but Flame was no longer there. The purple dragon looked to the left and right of the room, between questioning and slight panic.
"Flamy? Flamy or es...." He didn't have time to finish his sentence, as Flame rushed at him when Spyro had come face to face with the red dragon after turning around, and the two males formed a ball of red and purple scales and rolled on the ground to the front of the door. Flame found himself on top of Spyro and held him down by resting his front paws on his chest.
"Winner!" Said Flame laughing at the purple dragon's muzzle both surprised and charmed.
"Well done Flamy, you won this time!" They kissed, blushing, before Flame pulled back from on top of him and helped him to his feet.
"Thank you my love. That was payback for earlier!" Flame growled in satisfaction.
"This is far from over my Flamy." Replied Spyro playfully and defiantly.
"Time to go, handsome." Replied the purple dragon with more seriousness.
"I'll follow you!" Flame plastered himself to the side of his love, who covered him with his wing before the pair exited the room.
Hunter waited a little further down the curved hallway, halfway between the male and female bedroom doors so as not to miss any exits. Ember, Cynder and Ashes came out as the two males reached Hunter's level, Sparx moving to Spyro's side and smiling at him.
The two groups met outside the doors of the female room and headed for the central garden of the temple.
"Hunter, what is the ceremony for Spyro to be the new fire sage?" Ember asked.
"In a secret chamber accessible through the council chamber, deep within the temple, is a huge room containing the fundamental crystals of the ancestral elements. When Ignitus disappeared, the fire crystal became active again, having regained the power of fire that the ancient fire sage possessed. This crystal awaits the arrival of the one who is worthy of obtaining its power." Hunter explained to the group as the group passed under one of the trees in the garden. Hunter's eagle was still attentive on one of the branches and watched the dragons and dragonfly pass by.
"That's weird, I didn't see anything outside of the three corridors," Ashes reminded himself. Hunter smiled.
"That's normal. The access is protected by powerful and ancient magic, which only the sages or their predecessors can activate." Hunter replied to the general "hoooo".
By the time the conversation was over, the group had made their way down the hallway into the council chamber, where the three sages had their backs to the room. The three tall dragons turned around as they heard the sound of their arrival.
"There you are! Please take your seats." Terrador began to say as the group took the same seats as the first time.
"Good. Spyro, we have spoken at length with Volteer and Cyril about your upcoming duties as the new fire sage. Will you agree to use the ancestral power of fire to help and protect?" Terrador replied, looking at Spyro.
"I accept Terrador." Answered the confident purple dragon who looked at the red dragon next to him who nodded.
"Do you accept to follow your heart with wisdom and courage when you have to make a decision?" Asked the earth sage.
"Yes Terrador. I accept it." Answered Spyro even though his friends and Flame considered the purple dragon to be already doing so.
"Do you agree to be available as soon as possible, with your friends, when we call on you?" Terrador clarified knowing that it was important to Spyro.
"You bet I will!" Said he as he opened his large wings, puffing out his chest.
"Master Terrador, how will you proceed to call Spyro and how will you be where he is?" Ashes intelligently asked the three wise men.
"Another very pertinent question young dragoness!" Terrador replied while Cynder looked at his beautiful Ashes with pride. The latter blushed at the compliments.
"We have thought long and hard about this, and you should know that being linked to one of the four crystals allows us to know in which region the sage in question is located. Don't worry, we use this power in case of emergency, like when the three of us were..." Terrador did not finish her sentence as she looked at Cynder with compassion, for she understood that the earth sage was talking about when they had been held captive by the former empress of heaven, Cynder.
Ashes looked at Terrador and Cynder and understood that this was an event from the great dragoness' past. She placed her front paw on Cynder's to comfort her and show her that it was no longer important what happened to her former self. The dark purple dragoness looked at Ashes with great tenderness, as few people had that much compassion.
"Anyway! With this link, we will be able to send Hunter's eagle to meet you to warn you of our need to see the fire sage." Terrador replied as he turned his gaze to Hunter who was beginning to wave his arm.
A few seconds passed and a shrill cry echoed down the hallway that led to the garden, followed by the sound of flapping wings. Hunter's eagle had sensed the call of the cheetah to which the raptor was bound, like the dragon rider to his dragon, and landed on Hunter's forearm. The group watched the scene stunned, understanding the powerful bond between Hunter and his eagle.
"You must have thought long and hard about how to call Spyro if you needed to, Master Terrador," Ashes wondered.
"Not at all young dragoness Ashes, it took me a while to convince Volteer and Cyril." He sighed with his nostrils as he looked at them. His last ones remained subdued. The tone had to rise between the sages.
"It's not my fault that Cyril didn't think it was noble enough to make such a decision!" Volteer defended himself with a few sparks flying from his fangs.
"And if you had spared us your thousand and one hypotheses of what could have prevented the eagle from delivering its message!..." Cyril retorted, blowing an icy blue mist from his nostrils.
"It is enough!!!" Grumbled Terrador who immediately silenced the two wise men who were arguing like teenagers.
The group remained silent, a little uncomfortable that those who should represent wisdom were arguing like this. Flame looked at his older sister Ember and smiled, for it reminded them of their fight when he was younger. With every fight between them, there was a nine out of ten chance that one would lash out at the other and a struggle for the upper hand would occur. The red dragon thought to himself that he had never had fun fighting with his older sister, not out of argument but out of play. He looked defiantly at his big sister who understood immediately where his little brother was coming from and answered his look by whipping his tail on the ground a little. Terrador sighed and regained his composure.
"Well... Now that the conditions have been laid out, we will go to the underground cave of the ancestral crystals. Make contact with the table."
The earth sage placed one of his large paws on the edge of the table. Everyone did the same without really understanding, except Hunter because he would never allow himself to enter this place. Terrador smiled and resumed.
"Hunter, you are the most dignified and respectable person outside the temple that I know. If you do not wish to come with us, will you agree to check on Warfang until we return? Then we will have Spyro officially recognized as the new fire sage." Terrador asked the noble Cheetahs.
"Of course Master Terrador. Good luck Spyro." Said he as he looked with pride at his friend.
As Hunter walked out of the temple with his eagle friend, everyone watched as Terrador spread his wings followed by the other two sages and they closed their eyes. The group followed suit and a light surrounded them. They all had the sensation of falling and when they opened their eyes again, the light gradually disappeared, leaving a huge cave. Only the altar, where a round table of the same size, but with a different structure, was presentable, with a paved floor that formed a concentric circle with the table. The rest of the cave was natural, no statues or paved floor. A few sounds of water drops accumulated by the echo broke the heavy silence.
The whole cave was visible because many small crystals shone with different colors. At the bottom of the slightly rounded cave were four gigantic, perfectly symmetrical crystals. They were so large that they reached from the floor to the ceiling of the cave, perhaps even deeper and higher. A yellow-blue crystal on the far left, a blue-white one in the middle left, a red-yellow one in the middle right and a green-brown one on the far right. Three of them were of a dull tone and the fourth, the red crystal, was of a sparkling fire color that added brightness to the cave. It was as if a red and yellow-orange liquid was inside and flowing around trying to get out.
The three sages walked towards the huge crystals, followed by the group. The elemental markings on the scales of the three large dragons that were their own began to glow, and so did the other three crystals, but a different light than the fire.
"Master Terrador... What's going on?" Flame asked as he stood by Spyro.
"Fear not young dragons. The ancestral crystals sense our presence. There is only the fire one, waiting for its new bearer." Terrador replied, looking at Spyro.
"They sense... ? Does that mean they are... alive?" wondered Ashes.
"Very insightful young dragoness!" Terrador replied proudly, making Ashes blush under the proud gaze of her beautiful Cynder.
"Indeed, they are somehow endowed with a consciousness. This allows the ancestral crystals to preserve and offer their powers to worthy people. And in the case of the fire crystal... to retrieve it should its bearer disappear..." Said the fire sage with a sigh.
"What if one of them... should be destroyed?" Flame asked hesitantly.
"They are so powerful that no existing power could destroy them. If that were to happen... may the ancestors protect us, for theoretically, the four elemental powers would disappear one way or another..." He frowned at the large green and brown dragon, wishing it would never happen.
"Spyro, step forward alone in front of the red crystal please" Terrador replied looking at the couple with a sorry look on his face that they had to be separated even for this.
"Don't worry Flamy, I'll be fine." Said Spyro tenderly as he looked at Flame and licked his face to reassure him. The latter smiled at him and they peeled off so that the purple dragon stood in front of the glittering red crystal, with the three wise men surrounding him. The ever-discreet dragonfly remained at Flame's side during this time.
"Spyro, touch the crystal. It must make contact with you to probe you and see if you are worthy." Terrador explained as he looked at Spyro who did as the earth sage asked.
The purple dragon placed its front paw on the crystal and the three sages held up their wings which touched slightly, almost forming a perfect circle around Spyro. Their symbols glowed even brighter until they dazzled the entire cave. It took several seconds before the lights from the symbols of the three sages disappeared.
Looking at Spyro, the sages were surprised to see... that nothing had changed. The ancestral power was still in the crystal and the purple dragon had no markings or any symbol of fire.
"That's impossible... I read your eyes and your oath about your obligations as a new sage was sincere!" Terrador grumbled.
"Yes Terrador, I promise you, I sincerely accepted the conditions!" Replied Spyro who walked away from the crystal turning to Terrador.
"We need to talk about this. Wait for us here." Terrador asked the group who gathered in front of the glowing red crystal as the three sages moved closer to the table.
Volteer and Cyril began to argue, emotionally overcome with frustration and concern that the ritual had not worked. Flame stood in front of Spyro, concerned.
"Spyro, handsome, are you okay?" The red dragon asked him.
"Yes, don't worry Flamy dear. I just don't understand why it didn't work. Terrador was sure I was the deserving dragon. Not that I need that in my life, but it looked beneficial and important to Warfang..." Replied Spyro as Flame stuck to him and wrapped her wings and forelegs around him to comfort the purple dragon who welcomed him with love.
"It's not your fault Spyro. Maybe your power tied to the four elements at the same time allows for a balance that shouldn't be broken." Explained Flame to comfort his love as their tails entwined.
"You don't need this power to be the great Spyro my handsome" Flame resumed as he tapped the red crystal with his tail in a way that it was just another crystal to the red dragon, his tail still intertwined with Spyro's. They were having fun patting the crystal together with their tails wrapped around each other, which made Spyro laugh.
"Hehehe no Flamy, and I don't need it while you're in my life." He replied more warmly, starting to feel better and the two dragons embraced in the way they discovered together not long ago.
It was then that the lights of the small crystals in the cave gathered in the center of the cave, revealing the silhouette of a familiar dragon.
"Do not lose hope, young dragons."
Ignitus' voice echoed throughout the caves. The three sages stopped their debates and moved closer to the appearance of Ignitus.
"Ignitus... My friend, it's good to see you again." Terrador began, who was delighted but not surprised.
"I am also glad to see you Terrador." replied Ignitus.
"Wait a minute Terrador. Ignitus has become the new chronicler!?" Volteer asked, not knowing what to think.
"Yes." Terrador simply replied.
"And you knew about it!?" Cyril growled with a hint of jealousy.
"Yes." Replied the earth sage again.
"Did he summon your spirit as well, Master Terrador?" Ashes asked intelligently.
"Indeed, young Ashes. The night before he does the same for all of you." replied Terrador, smiling at the young dragoness. Terrador was beginning to have a lot of sympathy for Ashes, with her strong yet wise, thoughtful yet brave character.
"What? You too! While the wise men of the ice go on from generation to generation, and no one even thinks to summon me!" Cyril replied jealously.
"I would point out to you that my conversations are very rich in philosophy and wisdom, and that I would have been the most suitable to be summoned!" He growled as he faced Cyril.
The two sages faced each other, their nostrils emitting electric arcs from one and icy mist from the other, paws flexed as if they were going to throw themselves at each other. A figure flew up and stood between the two, mad with rage. It was Ashes who had had enough when there were far more serious matters at hand. Flame sat back and watched, for he knew Ashes when she was out of her mind. The young dragoness had once defended him against the two elders, not knowing at the time that they were enemies, but still seemed like respectable elders. Ashes flew at the height of their faces to make sure he had their full attention.
"But it's not over soon you two! You're supposed to represent the voice of wisdom, and for as long as I've known you, all I've seen is two dragons fighting over a jewel! There are things far more important than your rank or your philosophy!" Started such under the surprised looks of everyone, to talk to wise men like that, even though her beautiful Cynder was enjoying the show, and Ember knew her well as a friend. She spun around to look the two arguing sages in the eye.
"If you're going to slap each other on the snout, do it once and for all, and most importantly, go do it in private in an arena to let the adults think about how to solve a problem!" She finished by blowing black smoke from her nostrils, landing next to Terrador who was stunned by her audacity, while remaining respectful.
She had hit their egos where it hurt, leaving the two wise men silent and in shock who avoided all looks. Ashes didn't blush at the admiring looks on her face, still seething inside, but Terrador stared at her as if he saw a family bond between him and her, as if she were his own daughter.
"Thank you young Ashes... Anyway... Ignitus, to what do we owe the honor of your coming my friend?" Terrador asked, still overwhelmed by the sight of a girl in Ashes. He thought to himself that he would have to talk to Ignitus about it because of his connection to Spyro.
"Ignitus... I'm sorry..." Spyro stepped forward, happy to see the one he thought of as a father, but felt like he had disappointed him.
"Spyro, you have nothing to be sorry about. Don't forget that you've done more than anyone could have expected of a dragon your age. Your heart knows that destiny is a very powerful and complex force to understand, and your destiny is not to be THE fire sage young dragon." Ignitus explained sympathetically, with an odd emphasis on the word "THE".
"But who is this person then?" Terrador asked before realizing that he wouldn't necessarily get a clear and precise answer from the chronicler.
"That will come in its time my friend, but keep hope. Have confidence in the order of Ignitus." He answered with a smile and looked at each member of his order.
Terrador smiled and understood what Ignitus was getting at. For a group of young dragons and dragonesses to call themselves that was a symbol of hope, everything Warfang needed.
"When the fire sage is ready, the crystal will send its power to reveal itself. Trust me." Ignitus explained, as if he wasn't choosing his words at random.
"But Ignitus, for this to happen, this person must have accepted the oath of the sages and touched the ancestral crystal." Asked Terrador to the chronicler.
"Exactly my friend... Keep confidence." He said with a smile, without saying anything more than that, and the light faded away. Ignitus disappeared, repeating his last two words, which echoed several times in the cave, under the incompressible expression of everyone in front of the enigmatic answers of Chronicler Ignitus.
Terrador trusted Ignitus immensely and knew that the answers would come. The earth sage turned silently and went to the table to wait for the others.
"We have no further business here at this time. Come..." He said with a tone between reflection and concern.
The group settled back around the table, while the other two sages had somehow realized the gravity of things. Ashes looked at them with a frown and stood next to Cynder still admiring what she had done.
After gathering around the table, the group was teleported to the surface. Terrador walked out of the temple without a word but came face to face with Hunter without his eagle.
"Master Terrador! You should come to the healer's domain! You should all come."
"What's going on Hunter!?" Terrador asked in a worried tone.
"The dragon of fear... It has struck again." Hunter replied with a frown.
"You mean..." Spyro began without finishing his sentence.
"He's here..." Finished Hunter, spreading dread and worry in everyone's heart.
End of the chapter.
