150 Watchers: 066-068 Machop line
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers. As 2015 droned on, I realized I was losing touch with many of my furry friends: our main means of contact were IRC (which was blocked where I was now) and Skype (which was just plain becoming unpopular). Fortunately, there was still people who managed to find me and watch me even in this situation, albeit through my commenting on series like Found and Regressive Tendencies.
OdaWolf
I do think Oda watched me more as a show of support than because I actually had anything in my gallery for him (yes, him. I’ve been unsure for years and checked.) I instantly recognized him as a babyfur, but looking back, this was apparently a new thing for him at the time!
The main tell-tale is his featured picture, which shows him with a Power Rangers doll. For his drawing, I wanted to incorporate it somehow, but I also wanted to revisit the idea of the Meowth sketch, where the Pokémon realizes its trainer has been babified and is unsure what to do… mainly because Machamp is so short (2½ ft or 80 cm according to the pokédex), a baby could rightly confuse it for just another baby.
This might be the hardest expression I’ve ever drawn. Machop’s mouth isn’t shaped like I’m used to, and I’ve never drawn hands like this before. Hopefully it conveys the right idea. Oda was hard because, although he’s canonically a fox, I can’t help but look at him and think “wolf”. I think I managed to make him fox-like enough in the end, but I’m not sure of his torso. Once again, this is why I work in vector when I can: it allows me to fix these sorts of things.

Boss, as is his preferred nickname, was probably who truly introduced me to the concept of “sissy” (that is, boys dressed in girly clothes and “not wanting anyone to see”). For his Machoke, I actually took inspiration from a different boss, one that would most definitely have bodyguards. Of course, this boss doesn’t vibe with that, he’s more the kind to wander off with something shiny and need to be held back so he doesn’t end up in traffic …and with that I had the theme for my drawing.
Machoke was incredibly hard, though admittedly it was mostly because I was rushing it since I drew most of him right before rushing out the door. I usually look at several references and pick one, but to make things faster, I’ve started just grabbing the Bulbapedia infobox image, whatever it is. Unfortunately, for Machoke, it’s a low angle (which doesn’t give me a good idea of its face) and it’s flexing (which makes it hard to get a good idea of its arms as I had virtually no practice drawing muscles before I started this daily Pokémon challenge). Boss himself was more familiar territory, but once again I drew him too big. I had originally conceived he would just be trying to touch the crossing signal, not literally be wandering into traffic, but as I worked my way down, I realized I needed something to justify why what was supposed to be a waist-high child took up as much space on the canvas as the 5 ft tall Machoke!

If Boss was who introduced me to “sissy”, Niwa was who introduced me to the “adult baby” – that is, the concept that a babyfur can just be an adult wearing a diaper, as opposed to having to be transformed into the stocky proportions of a baby. However, this piece in his gallery suggests that, while he may not take on the proportions of a baby, he does like to be carried around.
For Machoke, I wanted to pay tribute to an old “Goofy the everyman” short where he struggles to do all the thing to take care of his baby; after all, Machoke actually has the extra arms to do it!
(Okay, technically it was inspired by two goofy shorts but I only took the concept of having to multiply your arms from that one)
I started having no idea what the expressions were going to be this time, which made it really hard to draw the faces. I also started undecided whether it should be modern implements or the ones from the Goofy short. I ended up going with the latter to pay a more proper tribute, but that mean having to check briefly what stuff like a can of formula powder looked like back then (it turns out there was no such thing, parents were instructed to just add corn syrup to the milk. There, was, however dried milk – or at least that’s what we call it today – and that’s what I depicted). What I anticipated having trouble with was keeping Niwa looking adult despite being cradled and rocked like a baby. Once again, that turned out to not be an issue. Instead, it was his hair that gave me trouble! I don’t think I’ve seen hair like that yet!
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
