Aldorah Krim parked the rover in a clearing just before entering the arena. They both descended taking a few steps forward.
"Thank you for bringing me here, and showing me this place, Miss Krim. It is very beautiful. I know you are very busy preparing for colonization, but honestly, it would have been a shame to leave Vika-B without seeing some of its natural charm."
"Heh heh... You don't have to thank me. It's my pleasure to serve as your guide. We don't get many visitors here and I'm glad I can help. Besides, I think you're officially the first tourist in Vika-B's history."
"Heh heh... So we're making history huh? It's an honor for me too Miss Krim" said Ben
"Please just call me Aldorah" The great rakshani replied with a smile.
"Okay, Aldorah. I see you two have done a wonderful job here."
"We have worked hard. And sometimes we were in danger from the action of the native fauna. But I suppose that is part of the job.
"Wow, I can imagine"
"Ugkar has done a lot of work, using hys incredible powers. Hy has the abilities of the red and blue skunktaurs combined. And I suspect, perhaps, hy can also use astral projection to some degree."
"I see. And considering everything you say about hym, I understand why the Federation was so interested in recruiting hym. Hy is quite a prodigy"
"Yes, hy is…" Aldorah said before remaining silent for a while. Ben looked at his face and thought he detected a hint of sadness. The rakshani sighed deeply, remembering the deceitful way she had recruited her mate. She still felt guilty for having contributed to harming the skunktaur race. The human, knowing the history of what happened, also kept silent. After a moment, Ben extended his hand to her and pointed:
"Will you accompany me to walk on the beach?" The rakshani lifted her head and nodded, trying for a smile.
They both walked on the soft sand while the waves drew graceful lines on the edge. Aldorah's bare feet could feel the cooling wetness of the water, as she squeezed Ben's smaller hand. After walking a few meters, the human commented
"It's beautiful, isn't it? This universe, with its stars, planets, and all its wonders. Even us, you Rakshani, Voxxans, Humans, Renzars, Skunktaurs, Chakats... All the different skins we wear, they are wonderful. But internally, our essence is the same: we are beings eager for knowledge, evolution, growth and change... Nothing remains static, Aldorah" The rakshani listened in silence while taking calm steps. Ben contemplated some distant clouds on the horizon.
"I know you still regret what you did, I can see it in your eyes. As you can see, I am not a skunktaur, but I know them well. I have lived with them since I was young and have studied them in detail, in all their intricacies. I can say that I fell in love with them. And it pains me to know that there are still species that do not respect them, despise them, or fear them... That only see them as objects, tools or weapons, due to their extrasensory powers..."
At that instant, Aldorah stopped. Ben's words resurfaced with more intensity the feelings of guilt in her. A choking sensation came over her, and an inner turmoil was crying out to come out. Her legs trembled and she had to sit on the sand to keep from fainting. She gritted her teeth as tears welled up in her big cat eyes.
"I...I...If only I could make amends for my mistakes..." she said sobbing. Ben crouched in front of her, and placing a hand on her chest, declared
"This pain you feel in here is the real payment for what you did, not the 22 years the federal court gave you. Can you understand that?"
The rakshani looked up and could see through her helmet that the human was smiling at her. Ben wiped his tears away with his fingers and continued to press on his chest. Aldorah felt a warm current flow to her heart.
"When my ancestors created the skunktaurs and the chakats, they made them better than us. They revere work and for that reason, no skunktaur will come here to blame you for anything, after seeing the wonders you have done with your hands. None of they will look at you with hatred, after seeing that you have given your life to make one of their own happy. In time, the red-paw ones will always recognize that mark on you. And perceiving that you gave your heart to Ugkar, they will see you as an equal, as they see me. They are generous Aldorah. Why do you think they saved you when you fell on that runaway ship in Chakona?" The human said with a calm voice.
Aldorah widened her eyes as she shuddered at the thought of those.
"Get up, live and be happy. Because life is too short to drown it in a sea of guilt, don't you think?" Ben added with a smile. The rakshani felt that everything the human said to her was like a pleasant balm that lifted her spirits. She sighed deeply, wondering who was this strange hairless creature that she had in front of her, and that she spoke to her in such a direct way. She had never in her life met someone like him, not in Raksha, not in the Federation. She wanted to hug him, but she felt unworthy. However, to her surprise, it was Ben himself who pulled her into his arms. Aldorah greeted him by resting her head on his suit-clad shoulder. They remained like that for a few moments, while the soft breeze from the beach shook the female's hair.
"Calm down Aldorah. Everything is fine" said the human, while he took her hand inviting her to get up. The rakshani, walked with him again under the rays of Vika.
"I am sorry. It's just that it's hard for me not to feel ashamed. I am a Rakshani and in my culture, dishonor carries a heavy weight..."
"Oh, the culture... Every species worships it as something sacred, not knowing that it is nothing more than mental programming. When people do not think for themselves, their culture thinks for them. You try to understand that your relatives in Raksha do not they see reality, but what their culture programmed for them. But, when time and they see what you have done here, I am sure that they will wake up, to the reality of the wonderful person that you are"
"But I am a criminal, and I deserve to be here."
"Aldorah, your opinion of yourself is vital. I see here a beautiful, repentant Rakshani willing to make amends to the federation for her mistakes. Stop thinking you're a criminal! Do you see anyone thinking that of you? What do your lovers Ugkar and Petra think it? The only one who believes it is you. Come on Aldorah" The human said with conviction. The female smiled, silently nodding.
"Thank you for your words, Ben. You are very kind."
"You're welcome, Aldorah. I only ask you, in the name of Rogar, to take great care of hys nephew Ugkar"
"Of course I will do! and I know that hy also takes care of me"
"Good! Remember, dear Aldorah, nothing remains static. If everything changes in the universe, why don't you start changing your opinion of yourself? Because it is a pristine truth, that to help others, first, you must be well and at peace with yourself" The human replied, smiling.
Both remained a while more observing that idyllic virgin landscape. Although the professor inside the suit, there was little that he perceived, the humid wind cooled their bodies and their minds in the same way. Inside him, he thought a lot about Rogar and the legacy hy had left him.
