150 watchers: 084-085 Doduo and Dodrio
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers.
Fadewolf88
Fade (no I don’t know if that’s his preferred name, but it’s what I’m going to call him) had basically two types of picture in his gallery when he watched me on August 17, 2017: Screenshots from what I presume is Second Life, and macro/micro drawings. I wanted to pay tribute to the specific drawing he uploaded on the day he watched me (Why that one specifically? It turns out, he has a plethora of ’sonas, making it impossible to pick just one! See what I mean about the name now?)
My literal thoughts as I stared this one were “I’ve seen men playing tug-of-war with their dogs, how can a man-dog playing tug-of-war be hard?” The answer is because the man’s arms are always pointed down towards the dog, here, the arms need to be pointed up. But once I had them positioned, everything flowed. Doduo was easy recalling my last experience drawing it, but the real challenge… was the cookie
I was not prepared for how hard the cookie was going to be! I thought it was “just a circle”, but no! Firstly, its role in the drawing is as a spacer, defining how far apart the two characters are. Secondly, I drew Fade’s hands and Doduo’s beaks before drawing the cookie, which meant I had to adapt the cookie to fit in. Third, it turns out that what makes a chocolate chip look like a chocolate chip is uniqueness: there are no two chocolate chips alike in a proper, traditional chocolate chip cookie – that’s the whole point! (It has something to do with the way the dough is kneaded and baked but let’s not go there). Fourth, a cookie is not a cookie if it’s not slightly crackled. A smooth cookie won’t “feel” like a cookie when you bite into it (sir, that’s a pancake). A cracked cookie will fall apart when you pick it up. So how does one even draw “slight” crackling? Well you pretty much add lines at random until it “looks right”
DarkFuzzyPaws
DarkFuzzy was churning out headshots like popcorn when he watched me, but he did stop to do a collab shortly before watching me. I wanted to remember that collab (because honestly, I can’t remember a single one of DarkFuzzy’s comments 😳)
What is DarkFuzzy? He doesn’t seem too fond of filling in the “species” tag on any of his artworks and it wasn’t instantly clear to me from the reference. Fortuantely, his BFF (the one he collab-ed with) does tag species, and the answer surprised me: He’s a fennec. Once I knew that, everything else flowed easily.
I made the mistake of reading Dodrio’s Pokédex entry before this. I now know its three heads are Joy, Anger, and Sorrow, in that order, and had to draw them in that way. This took attention away from the fact that I drew them too close to his shoulder, which is why Dodrio, rather than standing proudly, is all crouched down like that. Oh well, I call Rule of Cute! (Warning: TV Tropes link)
This wasn’t supposed to be a half-body drawing (even though the original is). I actually went through and found for a reference on DarkFuzzy’s Paws (heh) but the fact is, I had already spent an hour on the previous drawing, I was reaching the edge of the canvas, and it was getting really really late.
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
