150 Watchers: 086-087 Seel and Dewgong
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers. In the fall of 2017, I started a new job at the same company (not a promotion, I had to interview as if I were an external applicant to guarantee “fairness”, even though all candidates ended up getting hired). I thought my insider knowledge would mean that I didn’t have to spend time “learning the ropes” and could get back to arting… but it turned out knowing the ropes is not the same as learning the ropes, and the fact that I still didn’t have a car of my own meant I couldn’t exactly plan my time outside the office (if you think public transportation is undependable, try carpooling with someone who has no set clocking-in or -out time but don’t tell him I said that, I love you). But the fact that, nevertheless, people still watched me, gave me hope that I could overcome it.
Daphne_Lage
I have been deathly afraid of this one, to be honest.
I met Daphne through her most excellent NIMH fanfic Freeze Frame (I mean, sure, it’s a fanfic with all that implies, but it makes you wonder if she wouldn’t have written a better sequel than Don Bluth, or indeed, Jane Leslie Conly). Sometime later, she would gift me a digital copy of her book, The Oswald Chronicles. However, by that point, my life had gotten so hectic (I started really learning the ropes of my job), I was never able to finish reading it and, ashamed to admit it, I never tried to contact her again.
It is this fanfic which I am trying to honor with this sketch.
Seel’s role as weapons-bearer is based on this medieval lego cart, which probably only exists to show off the “clicky” action of the “stick holding” piece, rather than correspond to anything that existed in history. But honestly, what else are you going to use a Pokémon like Seel for?
That recent Foxes in Love comic has never rung truer! I couldn’t stop making that face the whole time I was drawing this.
The baggy nature of Anna’s (the rat’s) tunic made things hard for me. Since the whole point of this is to go without guidelines, I sort of had to guess what the arms were doing inside the clothes, and that guess makes the hands look slightly off: I guessed wrong. I am very happy with the head, though. I know it’s not perfect, but considering that I didn’t have a proper reference (remember, I have to pick just one; go look at the fanfic and you’ll see what I mean) and that there’s small but important differences in our styles, its amazing to me it even looks like the character at all!
As for Seel, once again, the whole “grabbing the first reference for the Pokémon rather than looking for the one that’s the most informative to what you’re going to draw to save time” strategy, screwed me over. I feel like I spent way too long just thinking what does Seel look like when it’s not flat on the ground. I added the “glow” of seal’s fur but I’m not sure it fits this particular drawing (or I didn’t do it right. I assumed the chest was in shadow. Would it be in shadow?)
Schmozy
Schmozy is a prolific commissioner. He was working his way through his commission history when he watched me on September 24, 2017, and on that day, he had an amazing two uploads involving ice cream, so of course his sketch had to involve ice cream!
Schmozy is another one who, I’ve noticed, all his submissions feature highly anthropomorphic characters, so he gets my 9th-ever pokémorph and first time adding legs to a creature that doesn’t have them.
I spent a lot of time studying this picture of what real-world seals’ must have looked like 20+ million years ago, only to realize at the last moment… I didn’t need it. Seals are not whales – they have feet! It’s only the legs they’ve lost to evolution, and those are covered by jeans in my drawing!
The only thing knew going in was that Dewgong had to have “flipper” (i.e. webbed) hands and feet; nothing else would make it a Dewgong, I felt. but as I started to draw, I realized something: Pokémorphs usually have hair! I didn’t want to draw hair! I wanted to draw your weird fat friend who.. wait, if Dewgong was a pokémorph, what was it going to wear? I’d done “Safari Zone” for Ponyta, so I had to do something with the Seafoam Islands for Dewgong, I thought. This firmly rooted Dewgong in Gen 1 (something I’d already decided by not deciding to do a “trainer pose”) and that’s when I remembered Ash’s hat, the one he “had to send a million postcards for”
I’m not happy with how Schmozy came out, but I’m not entirely sure what went wrong. Schmozy’ canon height is 6 ft (1.8 m), and every individual part is built for that fact… but somehow when you take it in all together, he does not look 6 ft tall, not even if we assume Dewgong is 6 ft tall too.
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
