Averie's sight was blurry from the swelling tears in their eyes. However, the presence of a light blue grumpus helped them to take a grasp to reality, and furthermore, to feel reassured. The void disappeared and now they recognized the cracked walls of their bedroom. The next thing Averie looked into were two violet orbs, showing signs of concern. Immediately they started to feel bad for causing a ruckus in the middle of the night.
"What happened, buddy?" they heard their friend Filbo ask in a worrisome tone, his paw...-or what is supposed to be his paw...-still remaining on their shoulder. Averie managed to breathe in a more steady pace, but the swelling tears remained, as well a shiver running down their spine. "S-sorry..." they managed to squeeze out through their mouth, as they felt a lump inside their throat. "J-Just...a nightmare..."
"It's your fault!"
Both grumpuses remained silent. Averie went into thoughts, about the last few months living on the island, and what they wanted to do after turning in the article. Filbo would return home once the effect of the Bugsnax had worn off...and then they would be on their own. And then what? Trying to find the next big story? Being on their own?
"Are you really alright?" they suddenly were thrown out processing their thoughts by the concerned tone of the light blue grumpus. "You...don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." Turquoise orbs observed the grumpus next to them as he scratched the back of his head with the arm that was not resting on their shoulders. "I...just want you to know that...you are my friend and if there is anything I can help you with...let me know..."
I don't deserve this...
Averie gritted their teeth as they squinted their eyes.
I don't deserve any of this...
"I..." they hoarsely muttered after processing what Filbo just said, looking to him, as the symbolic wall, that held back their guilt, started to crack. "I..." Their voice trembled and a snivel here and there escaped, now trying to reach out to their friend, as they saw the shock in his eyes.
"I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE!"
They are no longer able to hold it back. Unlike the times before, unlike two years ago, they can't hold it back any longer. Here they sat, breaking down in tears, as they repeated one single line, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
The next thing they felt were the arms of his friend draping over their figure and gently pulling them into a hug, which Averie responded to by leaning into his shoulders.
"It's okay buddy...let it out..." he tried to reassure the orange grumpus.
Filbo didn't say much afterwards when Averie sobbed in-between the crying what had bothered them for so long.
"It's my fault my sister died!"
"We...we had a nasty fight...that day."
"She ran towards the street...and...b-before I could...w-warn her about the c-car...it...it was...too late!"
This continued on what felt like hours. Spilling everything out what bothered them. Starting with the gnawing guilt that remained since the death of their twin, to the point where they fear the future, but also that every grumpus that would read their article would end up getting assimilated by the Bugsnax.
---
Averie did not remember the last time they felt warm and protected. What they know is that they felt a lot better after crying out the pain inside their heart. Even after the tears and the sobbing ebbed down, even after spilling everything out, they still remained in the comforting embrace of their friend. After making sure they felt emotionally stable enough, only there they manage to have eye contact to Filbo, giving a tired, but genuine smile.
"Thank you..." they said, wiping the tears off from their cheeks. "Thank you for...being there. I...really needed it."
Eventually both let go of the hug. Averie was sure they wouldn't be able to sleep for the rest of the night, so instead they wanted to get productive. After a small discussion with Filbo it was decided to start sorting through the evidences, with the compromise to try to sleep a few more hours afterwards.
