Clarion's Confession
Father Nigel named three 'Clarion' when she told him to call her whatever he wanted to. He won't tell her why though. I imagine that this image is in the early morning when the sun has just risen and the staff hasn't arrived yet, and Three has a few moments to have a private quiet talk with him before they need to go their separate ways for their respective duties.
This image came to me because it seemed to me that when you live a life like Three has, and you're a recent religious convert, you probably have a lot of issues and confusion and things you need to talk to someone about. Like if she's allowed to fall in love when every person she falls in love with dies around her. Or what she's supposed to think of worlds where they worship all sorts of gods, or her own where they worship none at all but instead strive to become gods themselves. Thoughts about what her destiny is, or why she ended up being ageless, or why she travels so much, or if magic use is a sin, or if all the people she's had to kill means she's a murderer...
Nigel was newly ordained when Three came to him, and utterly unprepared for the questions she had and the problems she brought to him. But he sees helping her as a calling and in the process of doing so he's learning and gaining strength himself.
This was a pen and ink drawing sloppily colored up in Sai. I'm still learning things and some pictures come out better than others. Oh well.

For the first time in his life, Father Nigel realized that all of those afternoons and weekends wasted playing D&D and watching Star Trek reruns were about to be put to good use.
If it wasn't for the inviolable confidence between priest and parishioner in confession and the promise of secrecy he likely gave to Three, I'm sure Father Nigel would be scribbling a lot into his notes because the theological implications for the Church would be staggering. When the nations of Earth fly out into space and encounter all of these alien races, the Church would uncover his notes and posthumously declare him a Doctor of the Church.
Then again, considering that Father Nigel looks to be taking all this quite well, I'm sure one of the first things he's going to say once Three is done is "Clarion, your mere existence here changes just about everything we know about ourselves and the universe, but to be honest, hardly anything you said is really new, nor are they the strangest things I've heard in a confession in my short time as a priest."
Awesome piece, especially since it illustrates that the most productive confessions are those that also include a good discussion of theology, morality, and ethics as well as a healing of the soul.

This is one of many times that being married to a priest has really helped me understand the character of many of the priests out there. I mean, there's some who to this day say they've purged demons from folks or who witness miracles, and many of these are rational intelligent men who sort of know how crazy it sounds. Many of them when in the midst of doing what they're truly called to do find themselves with all the strength and ability that they need to do it, although when it's all over they might fall over in an exhausted confused flop.
I sort of imagine that after every visit Three pays him, Nigel will quietly dash off and gather a boatload of books about theology and exorcism and miracles and other things. No doubt that just as he's helping Three understand her new found faith better, she's inadvertently helping him grow stronger and wiser in his own.

I once had a science teacher who, when asked how religion and science and extraterrestrial life could possibly coexist responded with, "God doesn't have to tell us everything". It has been interesting to think of the ramifications and thoughts that would go through an alien's mind of conversion though. A good inspiration has been the Space Trilogy by Lewis and things like that. And of course Uriel is a good go-to in the matter as well. Most of it are things I have to set my own rules for or just go with gut feelings, but it's fun to consider options and possibilities and things like that. for example what if she ends up on a world that has a 'God' that seems very similar to the christian God. Does she treat it like one in the same or stick to her own or what? And other little random things like that.
Father Nigel is actually the second clergyman to counsel Three. Her bishop in Germany was getting on in years and the distance made counseling her difficult so he did some very careful searching until he located Nigel. Probably when Nigel gets older he'll arrange for a trusted man to take his place as well.
