LOF IS BACK! I have neglected him for a few months, but now he's returned!
In his love quest to find a small and adorable human boyfriend, Lof has decided to move into a tiny human town close to his village. While this allows him to come across a much larger amount of potential partners, navigating the new social norms may prove difficult.
He seems to understand how smiling works, but the execution still leaves a lot to be desired... :P
This scene was inspired by the bar scene in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, by the way. Amazing movie! XD

ayyy I think a few people would happily buy him a drink over that smile, maybe not due to heart felt emotion and more trembling in their feathered hat and boots XD
(You hit the puss in boots vibe/homage super well it reminded me off it before I read the description ^^ Damn fine work)
Jokes aside have you met real dogos that do this? I know one personally and me mum has met two others.
Really freaks you out when you don't know they do it XD All the body language says friendly but teeth bared
But if dogs will 'learn' to 'smile' to please humans, it does raise the question on if the non-humans in your world would learn such behaviors if they were being diplomats or grew up from a young age in human lands, perhaps not fully bearing their teeth but just a 'slight' smile
And perhaps that humans that grew up in non human lands, would un-learn the innate trait of smiling and how those learned/unlearned, behaviors would/could negatively impact them when they are in their own kinds lands
ie, you might a Ajshar (who is not a known diplomat) who has a habit of smiling could be seen in the culture as either a Ex slave or human raised spy, or some other highly negative trait that may make them unwelcome in both city dwelling and tribal societies
Sorry for the long comment, just spitballing

Haha glad the reference was clear! ^^
Yes! I've known one dog who'd "smile", not in a super toothy way though, it was adorable!
I wonder! People would definitely have to follow the social norms of other species in areas where their culture is dominant. Very interesting thing to ponder about!

You think?
I meant that he looks absolutely absurd.
You cannot take a snoot to the face seriously.
Have you ever had a dog sniffing you in the face?
People have died to wolves biting them, but even those poor souls were thinking "are you kidding me?" as a brutal apex predator inspected their dying face with a curious sniff.

His heart is in the right place, but maybe he should start with a rakish smirk and work his way up from there, test the waters so to speak.
Also, that's a big doggo, is he tall for his kind or are they all around the 7-8ft mark? If humanity plays their cards right, they could have a new best friend/ally.

Baby steps, he will master the human body language at some point! :P
He's around 2,5 meters tall, I think that's over 8ft tall. He's quite average for his people! ^^
And yeah, in some areas they are friendly towards humans, in other places much less so (and viceversa, humans can be dicks too)

To be fair, his mouth looks about the right size to just... engulf that human's entire head. That sort of size difference can be very, very intimidating. That said, give it a few days, and everyone will get over it. A couple of weeks, and he'll get himself more human mates than he knows what to do with. Never underestimate humans when it comes to making friends.
OMG! I point out this dilemma so often about anthro human relations. Forgive the comparison, but I believe it would like studying how wolves communicate. If you're not used to being around them every expression and sound they make is very intimidating. Even if they're very happy to see you. Not to mention the fear of having not only a predator that 'could' kill and eat you sitting next to you, but a sentient predator that can be just unpredictable as any of your fellow man.
I really am starting to really love your character Lof. He's adorable! Though he may be trying too hard here to make new friends, especially with what I'm guessing with someone he's never met. But at least he's trying!
I also hope you can forgive me for generalizing much of your beautiful work into this next part. I have yet to explore your whole gallery, but there are many details in many pieces I would like to compliment you on. But I also don't want to be super repetitive or annoying.
That being said. You have a phenomenal attention for details! And I don't just mean the clothing and equipment or your level of fur deal without overkilling it. But from what I've seen you have many different cultures and time periods incorporated in your character designs. Sometimes in some of your bigger pieces many different mixtures of cultures can be seen in different character in the same piece. And in my opinion, without making most of the diverse styles look out of place. But even on a piece like this one. I'll admit I don't know all of the cultural relations of all the gear Lof has on himself, so apologies if I make any notion of knowing where any specific item comes from. The bands are interesting, the metallic looking ones on the right arm, and only one on the left arm that looks like a woven piece. While I want to think the neck clasp with the beautiful designs looks Aztec, however I seem unable to find much Aztec jewelry that looks quite like that. But the one I really want to point out is the ear adornments and braids/beads in the fur, not only in this piece but many of them. I definitely can't point out a specific place any of it reminds me of, but it looks like inspiration from the tribes of the world, African, the North, Central and South Americas. And maybe even Vikings? Even the human here is a great contrast having almost a European clerk garb.
Then you have your skill with character design itself. Again I'm using this piece as an example but going to try and reference much of your work. I really enjoy how you use a realistic feeling rendering on the muscle structure, even clearly defined 'under' the fur details. Sure Lof here has some impressive abs. But seeing the forearm muscles pull away, exposing the elbow bone is just a very enjoyable detail. You took the time here to illustrate each tooth in Lof's mouth, which helps convey the story you're telling here. And lastly, your skill with expressions is phenomenal and very inspiring. Across all your work (that I've seen so far) you don't just have the base expression on the face, But in many of your pieces I can see the character expressions effecting and deforming all parts of the face. Here with these two, Lof's smile not only pulls his face up into a grin, but is clearly not something he does often or isn't 'designed' to do, as his bottom lips are tucking under his molars. The snout muscles pulling up enough to show the teeth, but not producing a snarl. And the brows pulling Lof's eyes open wide while the human's crawl inwards to show concern. Then the big emotional flag that I feel is the most difficult to get right is the body language. Much of your work shows your ability to often create readable and understandable body language.
I'm done now. My apologies for anything I got wrong, for generalizing much of your work onto a single piece, and the horribly lengthy gush. You have a beautiful and inspirational style and work. I look forward to going though your gallery and any new work ^_^

Great job, I've always loved this kinda art style and am glad I discovered your work.
I love Lof but yeah, I'd feel better if he just stayed true to who he naturally is and what he does because the musculature and physics in smiling without a muzzle compared to with are very different and have different effects. But that's . . . not . . really the reason I'd feel uncomfortable or uhh . . heh, awkward or uhm . . . just heh uhh . . guh I mean . . . rrrmf. He's very sweet

Evolution has divided the species capable of making a grin into those that have retained the ability to attack with their jaws and those that have lost this ability. Since then, these two branches have had the opposite meaning of showing teeth. He who has dangerous jaws exposes his fangs as a sign of threat to his vis-a-vis. The possessor of weak jaws, on the contrary, shows his harmless teeth as a sign of absence of threat, and his vis-a-vis may not fear that he will be suddenly caught in the throat or in a vital artery. Therefore, unspoken etiquette recommended representatives of species armed with fangs in a friendly conversation with the owners of weak teeth to smile without opening their lips. And representatives of species with weak teeth were advised not to provoke negative attitudes and not to grin if the owner of weak teeth was not sure that his full-toothed smile would be understood correctly.
