Each finger represents 1 - 2 - 4 and 8. With a combination of "open" and "closed" fingers they could count up to 15. For instance, for number 10 would be: Finger 1 closed, finger 2 open (2), finger 3 close, finger 4 open (8) 2 + 8 = 10
In the case of 3 + 2 = 5 would be: finger 1 open (1), finger 2 closed, finger 3 open (4), finger 4 closed = 5
I guess with practice it would be possible to know each of the 15 possible combinations and count with their fingers like we do.
With a human hand (5 fingers) you could count up to 31 with a single hand (fifth finger represents 16).
