This story also sets up the upcoming (much longer) installation of the dino verse, which will feature a character that has long deserved her own story...
In the azure depths of the fairly shallow coastline of a prehistoric ocean, where rays of sunlight filtered through the water, Mira, a female Mosasaurus prowled with graceful determination. Her sleek form cut through the currents with effortless precision as she navigated the vast expanse of her underwater domain.
As Mira swam along the coastline, she unknowingly stumbled upon a hidden gem, an isolated shallow lagoon nestled off shore from a sandy beach. All that she could see was the entrance to this aquatic sanctuary, the rest was concealed by dense coral formations, accessible only through a narrow underwater tunnel.
Curiosity piqued, since a massive sea monster like Mosasaurus did not typically have much to fear in the way of other predators, Mira ventured into the dark tunnel, her massive body gliding effortlessly through the formation with inches to spare. Once she emerged into the secluded haven, her eyes widened in awe at the sight that greeted her.
The pristine lagoon was a vibrant tapestry of color, teeming with life and energy. Schools of thousands of shimmering fish darted through the crystal clear waters, their scales catching the sunlight in a dazzling display. Coral reefs flourished along the sandy seabed, their intricate formations providing refuge for an array of delicious marine creatures.
For the first time in her existence, Mira found herself in a place devoid of other large aquatic predators. Here, she reigned supreme without competition, a majestic apex predator in an untouched underwater paradise.
With a flick of her powerful tail muscles, the Mosasaurus surged forward, her senses alive with the thrill of the hunt. She effortlessly snatched some nearby fish from the water, her jaws snapping shut with precision as she indulged in the abundant buffet of prey that surrounded her.
After eating her fill, Mira swam leisurely through the tranquil waters of the lagoon and felt a sense of peace wash over her, a rare moment of calm in a chaotic world defined by the relentless struggle for survival.
As days stretched into weeks and then months, Mira lazily indulged in the abundance of captive fish within the isolated shallows. With no competition to challenge her dominance and very little exercise needed to earn her captive meals, she feasted with reckless abandon, her once sleek and streamlined body gradually succumbing to the consequences of her gluttony.
As a result, her lithe form began to swell, expanding into rounder and wider proportions. Mira’s body softened, obscured by layers of newfound fat that accumulated fairly evenly across her torso. Most noticeable was the emergence of a rounded gut, sagging slightly from her abdomen like a bloated trophy of her indulgence. Around the bases of her flippers, the beginnings of rolls of fat appeared, evidence of the excesses of her feasting. Her short, thick, previously muscular neck grew even wider, starting to develop a collar of soft fat encircling it.
As her body expanded, her activities gradually became less frequent and more sluggish and lethargic. Each movement, once executed with power and grace, now carried the burden of her newfound mass. Her newly chubbier tail struggled to propel her through the water with the same speed and efficiency, weighed down by the excess weight that now encumbered her every movement.
No longer driven by the relentless need to fight for survival, Mira moved only when necessary, expending the bare minimum of energy required to satisfy her substantial appetite. Curiosity to explore the vibrant lagoon gave way to complacency as she spent more time resting in the tranquil waters of her secluded sanctuary, content to bask lazily in the warmth of the sun and the abundance of food that surrounded her.
Additionally, as her body began accumulating excess buoyant blubber, Mira found that it was easier than ever for her to simply float around near the surface and relax, when in the past her more muscular form would have sunk right to the bottom, dangerously far from the life giving air of the surface. Now, when she was too full to hunt, the lazy Mosasaurus simply lounged in her lagoon, the calm water and her additional buoyancy supporting her impressive weight without requiring her to exert any of her gradually weakening muscles.
Despite the toll that her excessive indulgence had taken on her once formidable physique, the Mosasaurus remained the undisputed queen of the isolated shallows simply because she was the only large predator present, her bloated form demonstrating the results of unchecked gluttony in a world where survival was no longer a daily struggle.
As the days passed and Mira continued to gorge herself on the finite supply of fish within the lagoon, she soon realized the other consequences of her insatiable appetite. The once plentiful bounty of the warm waters began to thin, the abundant schools of fish dwindling to mere fractions of their former numbers.
Sensing the impending scarcity of food, Mira attempted to exit the lagoon through the tunnel she had effortlessly traversed several months ago. The Mosasaurus, her once sleek and powerful body now swollen and round with excess fat, swam lazily towards the entrance of the narrow tunnel through the coral. Unsuspecting of the challenge that awaited her, she began to squeeze her bloated form into the underwater passage.
As she pressed forward, the tight confines of the tunnel seemed to constrict around her, the unforgiving grip of the coral scraping against her scaly skin. She could feel the pressure mounting as her rounded torso pressed against the rough edges of the coral, each movement eliciting a chorus of protests from her strained muscles.
With a desperate surge of effort, Mira pushed against the resistance, her body contorting and writhing in a desperate attempt to escape the narrow confines of the tunnel. But with each futile attempt, she only succeeded in wedging herself further into the narrow opening, the coral seeming to tighten its grip around her flabby form like a vise.
Panic surged through her massive frame as she realized the gravity of her predicament. Mira thrashed and struggled against the coral, her frantic movements quickly slowing as her meager stamina flagged with each passing moment.
The massive predator, now a bloated and helpless creature, fought against the confines of her prison with all the force her underused muscles could muster. But as the minutes stretched on, it became increasingly clear that escape was futile.
With each futile attempt to force her way forward only serving to further ensnare her in the confines of the tunnel, Mira realized that her only hope of escape lay in retracing her path backward. As a heightened sense of urgency coursing through her, she mustered what little strength remained within her blubbery frame and began to slowly reverse her movements.
The tight confines of the tunnel continued to press in around her as she painstakingly wiggled her way backward, her thickened sides scraping against the rough edges of the coral with each sluggish movement. The effort was agonizing, her weakened muscles trembling from exertion as she fought against the relentless grip of her confinement.
As Mira inched her way backward, the minutes stretched into an eternity, each second ticking by incredibly slow. Her lungs burned with the desperate need for air, the loss of stamina that had come alongside her excessive weight gain from successful hunting now proving to be an ironic obstacle in her battle for survival.
With each determined wriggle, she drew closer to the surface, her determination fueled by the primal instinct to breathe once more. As the light of the surface beckoned tantalizingly above her, she pushed herself onward with renewed vigor, Mira’s will to survive overcoming the weight of her own blubber that threatened to drown her.
At long last, with one final surge of effort, the Mosasaurus broke free from the confines of the tunnel, her flabby form bursting into the open water with a sense of relief that bordered on euphoria. Gasping for breath, she greedily panted in the fresh air. Though exhausted and weary from her ordeal, Mira now knew that she was not capable of leaving the lagoon in her current state, and after that experience, she was not particularly inclined to try again.
Several weeks had passed since Mira's harrowing ordeal in the narrow tunnel, and she had since resigned herself to the peaceful routine of her secluded lagoon. Yet, her newfound tranquility was shattered one fateful day as she was rudely awoken from a lazy nap by the unmistakable splashing of water nearby.
With a groan, the even rounder Mosasaurus reluctantly roused from her slumber, her bloated form shifting lethargically as she surveyed the scene before her. Several thick rolls of blubber adorned her neck and shifted around each other as she turned her head to investigate. To her disbelief, she beheld the imposing figure of a similarly obese Spinosaurus, its massive frame splashing confidently into her private lagoon.
As the Spinosaurus began to enthusiastically gorge itself on her dwindling supply of fish, Mira could only watch in stunned disbelief. Gone was the solitude and easy life she had grown accustomed to, replaced now by the unwelcome intrusion of a rival predator.
With a deep bellow rumbling in her throat, the Mosasaurus begrudgingly stirred from her lethargy, her bloated body quivering with frustration and indignation. Each sluggish movement sent ripples cascading through both the water and through her coat of blubber, her previously sleek form now encumbered by layers of excess fat that had accumulated during her months of indulgence.
Her rotund belly, round and distended with fat and undigested fish, sagged from her abdomen, its girth hindering her movements as she attempted to propel herself forward. Thick rolls of blubber adorned her sides and the base of each chubby flipper, rippling with each labored stroke of her underused flippers, while her tail, once a powerful instrument of propulsion, now struggled under its own burden of adipose to generate the speed and force necessary to challenge her opponent.
As she lumbered forward in a clumsy display of aggression, Mira's body wobbled and jiggled with each sluggish movement, the excess weight causing her to labor against the resistance of the water. Her once muscular flippers, now adorned with additional layers of fat, strained under the pressure as she struggled to gain momentum, their movements sluggish and weak.
As Mira pressed forward with all the meager speed she could muster, the obese Spinosaurus, noticing the impending charge, swiftly retreated several paces onto the sandy shore. Despite her own flabby figure with rolls of lard and a low hanging gut, the Spinosaurus still had the advantage of moving on land, so it was easily able to evade the oncoming attack despite their similar lack of physical prowess.
However, the Mosasaurus, her massive bulk giving her far too much momentum to stop in time, found herself unable to halt her charge. With a powerful surge, she propelled herself forward, only to find herself beached in the shallow water, her rotund belly squishing against the sandy bottom and her front rolls plowing sand out of her way as she crashed onto the beach.
For a moment, Mira lay there, processing the sudden turn of events. Her bloated body heaved with the effort of her futile charge, her breaths coming in labored gasps as she struggled to regain her bearings. The glaring light of the bright sunny day unfiltered by the water she was accustomed to momentarily dazzled her sensitive eyes. Around her, the water lapped gently at her rounded sides, her massive frame sprawled helplessly across the sandy bottom.
Despite her predicament, Mira refused to admit defeat. With a determined grunt, she attempted to wriggle back into deeper waters, her flippers flailing awkwardly against the resistance of the sand. As she worked to retreat back to her natural environment, the Mosasaurus noticed the terrestrial predator was backing up further onto the shore, away from her lagoon. Oblivious to the unusually large wave building behind her that the Spinosaurus was moving to evade, Mira assumed that her pathetic display had successfully scared off her competition.
Abruptly the wave crashed into the unsuspecting Mosasaurus from behind, propelling her significantly further up the sand before retreating, leaving her fully beached on the land. She started to redouble her fruitless efforts to squirm her way back towards the water, but as she strained against the weight of her own body without the buoyant support of the water she was used to, she realized the futility of her efforts. Trapped on the sand, with the Spinosaurus looming menacingly nearby, Mira knew that she was at the mercy of her adversary.
As the Spinosaurus barreled forward with a deceptively fast waddle, Mira felt a surge of panic course through her bloated body. Desperately, she began to squirm and wriggle, her massive bulk straining against the resistance of the wet sand as she struggled to reach the safety of the deeper lagoon.
For a moment, it seemed as though she would be unable to escape the relentless pursuit of the terrestrial carnivore. Her movements were sluggish and awkward, her atrophied muscles protesting against the strain of her heavy body.
Just as the Spinosaurus closed in, ready to deliver the final blow, another large wave crashed into Mira from behind. The water provided her with precious moments of slight buoyancy, allowing her to slide back into the welcome embrace of the lagoon.
With a sense of relief flooding over her, Mira submerged herself in the cool depths, descending quickly to the bottom of the lagoon. Around her, the tranquil waters offered a welcome respite from the chaos of the surface, a sanctuary where she could recover from her recent ordeal.
Meanwhile, the Spinosaurus, breathing a bit heavily herself from all the excitement, realized that the effort of pursuing the Mosasaurus was no longer worth the reward and abandoned the hunt, waddling off in search of an area with more plentiful fish.
