Songs of Fidonhaal: The Heart's Fire at Dusk
The third of three Fidonhaal love songs I’m posting on here for Valentine’s Day 2024. <3
(marked "mature" because I figure the "intimate" angle is more pronounced in this one, even if arguably still not the most "vividly" so)
For those curious, “Fidonhaal” is the name of the world in my anthro-fantasy-adventure setting, which presently has one novel under the Saga of Fidonhaal serial-moniker, that being Daughters of the East, which is now available in both e-book and print-on-demand paperback formats on Amazon.
This one is planned to be featured in what is presently intended to be my next work to be published, which is a collection of short stories featuring a recurring character, his family and companions, and his adventures with them. However, at the time of this upload, I have no ETA for the release date of this, as it’s still very much a work-in-progress. Nevertheless, I thought this was worth sharing now for anyone interested, not to mention that the part it’s planned to appear in is comparatively more polished than much of the rest of the WIP at this time.

Cultural Context Notes:
This song/poem is a romantic-and-erotic love song, sung from the perspective of a married Fidon man who is joyously greeting his wife as she returns to him at the end of the day.
Across the world of Fidonhaal, loyalty of essentially all sorts is a highly regarded value that the overwhelming majority of people strive to uphold, the most important form being that of faith to their God, Onu. However, marital fidelity is also a highly valued practice, with marriage being regarded as a sacred oath between two Fidons to accompany one another through the path of life on the deepest, most intimate level that can essentially be reached between two mortals.
As such, as spiritual as the Fidons are, they are also quite receptive to, and celebratory of, the romantic and physically sensual and erotic within the contexts of a loving, loyal relationship. Thus, this song entails the joy of loving and affectionate companionship while also declaring intense passion, concluding with a frank, erotic statement by the husband toward his wife.
Fidon: A person of the world of Fidonhaal. From our perspective, they appear as anthropomorphic wolves. As such, words such as “Fidonity” and “Fidonkind” are their equivalents of “humanity” and “humankind.”
Onu: The monotheistic deity of Fidon religion and spirituality; the sole and supreme Creator.

* * *
At last, the sun sets, dear wife,
On this day we were apart,
And not a one but you alone
Can sate the flame within my heart.
The blessed bond we forged together,
When we vowed it before Onu
And before all Fidonity
Drives my heart to beat beside you.
Highly soaring, brightly burning
Is the heart’s fire at dusk;
Hotly churning, boldly roaring
Is the heart’s fire at dusk.
Word has reached these pining ears
Of your long-awaited return;
A moment’s passing was as forever
To bear the pain of my heart’s lonesome burn
Such anguish cannot be salved
By any woman other than you,
Whose blessed grace and tender heart
Carries and nurtures a love great and true.
Highly soaring, brightly burning
Is the heart’s fire at dusk;
Hotly churning, boldly roaring
Is the heart’s fire at dusk.
My heart and soul drive my feet and loins
To swiftly seek you, dearest wife,
Who by Onu and Fidon’s blessings
Hast given me strength and solace in life.
At last, I reach you and embrace you;
Toward our hearts’ haven I carry you,
For our loving bond, blessed and true
Quenches my heart’s fire whilst I’m within you.
Highly soaring, brightly burning
Is the heart’s fire at dusk;
Hotly churning, boldly roaring
Is the heart’s fire at dusk.© 2024 Lucas Gant
