In the far northern regions of Eidon the lands are bitter cold and covered in perma frost, yet even here a few races manage to thrive in the harsh environment such as the Vossen, Lipane, Volfen, a small tribe of humans and most notable the Pygoss who have inhabited these lands the longest. It's not know just how long they've lived in this area as their own oral history is rather vague about it, and it is also puzzling just how these bird folk ended up here being flightless though it is possible they sailed here seeing as they are quite capable sailors and excellent swimmers even in the freezing cold water. They are at home in the water as much as they are on land, capable of diving to great depths and staying submerged for up to 20 minutes on a single breath. This ability comes in handy for tending to their kelp forests which they grow as an additional food source along with a few crops they can manage to grow such as a couple of different plants whose roots can be used to make flour and sugar and a few fruits can also be grown near hotsprings that are shielded from the elements by high rock walls either natural or built. Though their most famous export is their national drink, Quatt, a high proof drink made of fermented fish, roots and herbs. While drinking Quatt staves off the cold for a short time it also has some health benefits as it has a similar alchemical effect to a low grade healing potion. One other export of note would be the brow feathers all Pygoss possess which keep growing their entire lives and are usually clipped when they reach a certain length and prepared for storage to be sold to traders across Eidon as these feathers are prized for decoration, so if you've ever wondered where the feathers adorning a bard or noble's hat come from now you know.
They've also domesticated a few animals, most iportant of which is the Pakka which is their main mode of transportation on land, but also provides milk and it's long fur which has to be regularly trimmed and brushed can be turned into warm and water resistant fabric which is very useful with the local weather. Eggs ara obtained from semi domesticated flightless birds often referred to as crypt birds or snowquacks by the locals because these birds burrow into the snow to make their shelters and a bad blizzard can seal them in or collapse the burrow, thus turning it into a tomb when they can't dig their way out using their spoon shaped beaks. Obviously it's not so great for the birds when this happens but for others trying to survive out there it is an easy way to find a food supply if they know how to find these burrows. The Pygos will build shelters out of snow blocks to lure these birds into their settlement to have easy access to the eggs, a small price to pay for the birds for enjoying the safety of the village.
Houses are built mostly out of stone and what little timber is available and are built to last many generations as new ones were rarely built due to the shortage of timber and reserving most of the wood for firewood. Most of the house is built underground to preserve heat with the ground floor mainly used for storage where it is cooler and one or two floors below that depending on the size of the household and expanded accordingly. For this reason houses are built a fair distance apart to prevent people from accidentally digging into their neighbour's home, which has happened in the past and does still happen on a rare occasion when people just carelessly expand their homes without checking the village records, which are constantly updated, on where they can expand. Though these days it is encouraged to expand downwards first up to four floors below ground, and sometimes these lower floors house another family or two which haven't grown too large yet, or extended family may choose to move in on the lower floors or a room might be offered to guests. Light is provided with oil lamps set in niches in the walls. These lamps are designed with a lid to extinguish the lamp and a flint and steel for easy lighting by simplu twisting a knob to spark a flame. Being a guest in some one's home is a great honor as the Pygoss aren't easy to trust just anyone but they will still offer shelter to those in need and those who behave respectfully will always be welcome back again for shelter, a slice of freshly made fish pie or a shot of Quatt as they share stories of their travels and the outside world.
Pygoss religeon has shamanistic roots based on the elements which are the lesser deities who serve the seven gods and goddesses of creation, and each one of the four children governing a season on their calendar with some overlap of the great father and mothers. This effects many things in their culture and lives such as males having up to two wives and while they can have more than two wives their status goes down a bit with each additional wife after the first two as it is believed to go against the natural balance and example set by the great mothers and father. Often these relationships don't last and are a sign of trouble in the household as often one of the wives will eventually leave sooner or later, which harms the male's status and make him undesirable for any other females. Since the Pygoss tend to mate for life this is especially bad should a male lose his wives for any reason he may have a very hard time finding a new one, as well as his lineage possibly ending as any children he might have sired will not be acknowledged as his anymore.
They also have a fairly unique language which is difficult to learn and understand, even among other bird folk as their language is close to feral sounding making more use of squawks and honks compared to most other bird folk. Though this might be confusing to understand at first the pitch and tone have different meanings, but even if you would learn the differences it would still be confusing to understand the Pygoss. Fortunately they are multi lingual and can also speak common human sometimes but mostly they are fluent in but the Lipane and Vossen languages because of frequent contact with them. They also seem to have knowledge of long forgotten tongues such as the Runari, Nagassa, Drake and ancient Draconic languages which just shows how long the Pygoss have existed on Eidon.
