The trees were so big their crowns vanished in the haze; it was like walking underneath a murky sky held up by colossal pillars. Underneath, the roots dominated the landscape, forming ridges and valleys that made the forest hard to navigate. The animals living there had to deal with the same problem for generations, having come to the solution of following their ancient trails that made the quickest and easiest paths visible. I had to rely on these paths myself, passing numerous other creatures big and small. Some were unbothered by my presence, others stepped into the undergrowth and let me pass before resuming, but none was attempting to flee further away. These paths were as vital to the animals' lives in the forest as they turned out to be for me crossing it.
