The air was filled with the rustling of leaves and the sounds of the citizens of Roo Island who were busy either raking or playing in them.
Zarra took in a deep breath and sighed while another strong gust made its way past her cute, pink nose.
“Wow,” she sighed happily. “This is sure nice.”
“Uh, oh,” said Caldma in a simple yet telling tone.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Zarra looked down at the little one and noticed that, just as she had feared, he had sprang himself a little leak.
The royal zafara sighed again. However, this sigh was much different from the one she had released just moments ago.
Sensing her mood change, Caldma tugged at Zarra’s dress and said, “Sorry, Zaza.”
The frustrated, royal zafara flopped her hands against her sides an let out a gasp of displeasure as she stared down towards her little cousin.
“Oh, Caldma,” she lectured. “You’re supposed to let me know before you have an accident.”
The green, baby scorchio began to sniffle as tears started to well up in his eyes. The look upon his caretaker said it all and he felt absolutely miserable for being the reason that she was becoming so unhappy.
Realizing her mood was projecting negatively upon the little one, Zarra took in a calming breath to relax herself before she upset the young scorchio anymore than he already was. Potty training was something that they had just started and it wasn’t like Caldma was going to get the hang of it within less than a week’s time.
“Please don’t cry, Caldma,” she pleadedwhile scooping the baby scorchio up into her arms. “We’re only a short way from the Merry-Go-Round. We’ll just get you cleaned up and get back to having a fun day. I promise.”
Caldma slowed his sobbing and opened his eyes a bit upon feeling himself being cradled in Zarra’s arms. He then stuck his thumb into his mouth and nervously began to suck upon it.
Zarra cradled Caldma in one of her arms while using her free arm to verify she had a clean diaper inside of her purse.
“Never leave home without one,” she joked to herself while she thought about how unlikely it was that other royal zafaras traveled about with diapers in their purses. Then again, as she soon recalled, she wasn’t what any zafara in Meridell would ever consider to be a true-blue Royal.

Despite having a wonderful childhood, Zarra ran into some rough times. Upon finishing Neoschool, she went on to pursue a college education in one of the many esteemed academies in Brightvale. However, while in the pursuit of this advanced degree of education, her and her family fell onto hard times. It was at this point that she began to hang out around the Neopets Portal in the hopes that one of the many humans who crossed over would adopt her and help her to make her dreams of becoming a college graduate a reality.
After a short wait, one human did make their way into Neopia and offered their time and love to her. However, this affection and concern was short lived. The human quickly became involved in other endeavors and, as if they were casting a pebble from their shoe, left her poor and alone outside of the Neopian Pound. Of all the memories in her life, the day she was left for dead outside of the pound will always live on as the lowest and worst of her entire life.
Months passed and her beautiful, red fur began to turn brown and become covered in an array of annoying knots and tangles. She’d often find herself spending days standing along the corners of Neopia Central with a small jar in her hand begging anyone who would pass by for whatever they could spare. Her time as a street urchin soon earned her the name ‘Jar Zar’. This name came to haunt her as passersby would simply refer to her as this instead of offering any neopoints, food, or compassion to the struggling, red zafara.
Just when all hope seemed lost, another human being came through the Neopets Portal. This one carried a really young, baby scorchio in his arms and seemed very happy-go-lucky. Like she always did, she approached the passersby and asked if they could spare anything to help her survive the dire circumstance she was in. To her surprise, the human was quite taken by her plight. So much, in fact, he asked if she would like to accompany him along with his baby scorchio as they traveled about the whole of Neopia.
It went without saying that Zarra was extremely happy to finally have someone show her the love and care she had been longing for. The fact that it was coming from one of the human visitors amazed her even more. Especially since the humans always seemed more caught up in their own affairs to ever pay any attention to a lowly zafara like her who was down on her luck.
Needless to say, the rest of the day went extremely well for young Zarra as the human treated her to meals and helped her to clean up all the dirty and matted up fur she had acquired from months of having to live on the streets of Neopia Central. It was at this point that she received the shock of her life when the human asked her if she would kindly join him and his baby scorchio, Caldma, on their forthcoming escapades in the world of Neopia. Without a single moment’s hesitation, Zarra said yes.
After the kind human paid off her debts to those at the Neopian Pound who had allowed her refuge for all the months she was made to live off the streets, the human brought her to a tiny house on Roo Island that he had begun to construct. It was at this point that he stated that he really wasn’t the typical human visitor to Neopia and that his primary concern was to ensure those neopets who fell under his care lived happy and wholesome lives. Zarra didn’t know what to make of all this, but she was elated to finally see a room and a bed of her very own. She thanked the kind human and quickly went about making herself at home.
Over the next year, Zarra grew to enjoy her new life on Roo Island with the baby scorchio colleague she came to know as her cousin. Despite being put in charge of his upbringing, she felt elated to feel her life finally starting to come together. Perhaps, in due time, she may even be able to attend the universities at Brightvale once more and become the scholar she had always wanted to be. However, it was at this point that fate threw her yet another fantastic surprise.
While doing the dishes one day, she heard her human friend come into the front door. As she had always done, she dropped everything to ensure he felt welcome. Likewise, the human begged her to not do that as he saw her as a friend and not a servant. Needless-to-say, though, she was taken back by how two other humans were present along with her human companion. They each had their Neopian friends with them and all were wearing bright smiles across their faces. Zarra didn’t know what to make of it. However, the answer soon came to her as the human who had adopted her placed a large box in front of her and insisted that she open it straight away. Confused, but eager, she wasted no time in opening the box and was shocked beyond recognition when she found a Royal Paint Brush glittering inside of it.
Before she could say a word, the human told her that he felt she deserved something special for all that she had done and had been through. The two friends who were with him further confirmed this statement and noted how they had helped contribute the neopoints necessary to make this surprise happen.
Zarra didn’t know what to say, so they all told her it was okay that she say nothing and just be happy with her special surprise. It was at this point that her human companion took her by the hand and asked her if she was ready to take a trip to the Rainbow Pool. Of course, she was worried about little Caldma, who had just gone down for a nap. It was at this point that her human friend assured her that his two companions would make sure everything was okay while they were out making her the true princess she always was meant to be.
