CHAPTER 20
Chakastra had reached its zenith in the sky of Amistad when Gerak-Nee arrived home. Disturbed by the events of the night, he silently entered the house, unaware of the presence of the female Rakshani who cohabited with him, who watched him from the comfort of the sofa.
"Your appearance suggests a difficult night. You look downright disheveled!" she commented with some mordacity.
“Grrr! My life is none of your concern, woman!” the male replied brusquely.
"You're acting like an idiot as usual," she said, sipping her coffee with apparent indifference. Gerak opted for silence and headed straight for the bathroom.
“Yesterday we had a visit from a policewoman. She said she was a friend of yours” added the female in a calculatedly casual tone.
The engineer stopped walking and turned to face her.
“What did you tell her?”
“What we agreed on. I introduced myself as your newly arrived partner from Raksha”
“What! By all the gods!” Gerak exclaimed, instinctively touching his eye, which had been injured by Natany's blow.
“Have I made a mistake? Wasn't that what was agreed?” the female asked with feigned innocence.
“Grrr… Definitely not!”
“Come on Gerak… Don't tell me you have a love affair with one of those disgusting furry creatures. I understand your curiosity to experiment with exotic species, but having a formal relationship with a renzar is far from being appropriate for a proud rakshani like you”
“GRRRR! SHUT YOUR MOUTH! You don't know anything about me!”
“Nothing? I've known you since you were a child”
“Zeraya! Listen to me carefully! I only agreed to help you because of our family ties. But that doesn't mean I have to tolerate your offensive comments. I distanced myself from the family a long time ago for good reasons” Gerak replied exasperated.
“Family is not something you can let go of, Gerak. You might regret it,” the female replied with disturbing serenity.
“Damn! I have to talk to Natany… And explain everything to her” Gerak declared out loud, speaking to himself.
“What! Are you going to tell that police everything?”
“I will inform her of our kinship, and if you persist in your hostile attitude, I will not hesitate to mention your illegal status in Chakona”
“Are you threatening me, Gerak? Is that what you do?”
“I am simply stating the circumstances!” the Rakshani declared firmly.
Zeraya, with growing indignation, stood up and slowly approached the engineer, swinging her thick tail.
“Do not underestimate my position, Gerak-Nee. It would be unwise to threaten someone of my lineage”
“This is not Raksha. Hierarchies and castes have no validity here,” he replied, maintaining his defiant stance.
“Well, in that case, perhaps it is time to refresh your memory,” Zeraya said as two male Rakshanis emerged from the kitchen carrying weapons.
“What does this mean? Who are you?” Gerak asked, visibly bewildered.
“They, my dear, are my partners… Did I not mention that to you?” Zeraya replied sarcastically.
“You said you would come alone from Raksha!” Gerak-Nee declared.
“You are clearly unaware of the customs of high-born Rakshanis. We never travel unaccompanied”
“Relax, Gerak. Nothing will happen to you if you don't open your mouth” warned one of the newcomers, still aiming at him.
“I want you to get out of my house now!” exclaimed the engineer with barely contained anger.
“What will you do if we refuse? Will you turn to your police friend? Tell me Gerak. Did you tell your acquaintances in Chakona who you really are? Did you really think you could start a new life as an engineer so easily after what happened in Raksha?” Zeraya said with irony.
Gerak, his fists clenched and his body tense, prepared for an imminent fight. However, aware of his numerical disadvantage, he chose to maintain his composure.
“Gerak, my dear,” Zeraya said, approaching with feigned gentleness, “there is no need to make matters worse. Keep your silence and everything will be resolved favorably,” she concluded.
She then leaned close to him and gave him a long kiss. The engineer vehemently rejected the gesture. The other two Rakshanis exchanged knowing glances, smiling at their companion's bold behaviour.
At that moment, a knock was heard at the front door. Zeraya quickly looked out of the window.
“It's her! Your police friend”
“Natany!” Gerak said in surprise. The other Rakshanis looked at each other, and agreed to retreat to the inner rooms.
“Listen, Gerak. Don't you dare give us away. We'll be watching what you do” warned the determined female. The engineer was paralyzed. Although he wanted to see Natany again to explain everything, he knew that this was not the time, nor the place to do it.
While Sorah, Regthar, Bluma and Doren played with Hajo in the lake's waters, Lilethe and Esteban watched the scene from the shore. The skunktaur, in hys female phase, rested peacefully on a blanket, supporting the human. With their hands intertwined, they enjoyed the view and each other's company.
“This place is truly beautiful, don't you think, Lilethe?” commented Esteban.
“Certainly. When I was a child, my parents brought me here once. See that patch of bright green on the hill?”
“Yes, I see it.”
“At the top there is a splendid viewing platform. From there you can see the whole extent of the lake. Would you like to go up?”
“Sounds fun. Let's do it, love”
“Heh, heh... Excuse my constant restlessness, but it's inherent in my nature. Activity is an essential part of a skunktaur”
"I understand and accept that. I am pleased to be able to fulfill your wishes, Lilethe," Esteban said affectionately.
They shared a tender and long kiss. After a pause, the nurse said:
“You've noticed, haven't you? Sorah and Regthar still seem undecided”
“Yes, it is a delicate situation. Do you think they will address the issue with the family today?”
“I'm not sure. I sense that both of them have many doubts, not only in their minds, but mainly in their hearts”
“My wish is for everyone to be happy. I wouldn’t mind emigrating to Grom if necessary. However, the thought of being separated from Sorah and Regt makes me uneasy. I feel like they are an integral part of my being,” the engineer mused with a sigh.
“I share your feelings. Sorah and Regt are also my adoptive parents and have been instrumental in my process of overcoming grief. Honestly, I would prefer that everything stay as it is. I am convinced that it would be extremely difficult for Doren to leave hys parents in Berdoovia. However, the decision is theirs. Our duty as children is to support them.
“I know... And it scares me. Why is Avik making this proposal now?”
“I think Sorah's father is seeking to make amends. However, he may not be aware of the unnecessary tension his offer has created in the family. I recognize that his intentions are noble, but as I mentioned, it is a decision that is solely up to Sorah and Regt”
“You know, Lilethe, sometimes I feel guilty. It pains me to imagine all the suffering the Renzar have experienced because of me. All those times when I was on the brink of death. And when we faced Faise… It makes me shudder to think of what they felt when I was declared dead. They didn’t deserve to bear all that weight, Lilethe,” Esteban confessed, tears in his eyes.
“Honey, calm down. You shouldn't harbor feelings of guilt” the skunktaur replied in an attempt to comfort him.
“For that reason, I feel it is my duty to support them in whatever decision they make. If Sorah and Regt wish to return to Grom, so be it. Perhaps they will find greater happiness away from me” the human concluded.
Lilethe, adopting a serious tone, replied:
“Esteban! Don't be absurd. Can't you see it? They are extremely happy with us, especially with you. And with Doren too. I'm convinced that if one of us left home, they would suffer”
“Awww Lilethe, please hold me” the engineer requested, snuggling into hys arms, while a gentle breeze coming from the valley swayed the skunktaur's fluffy tail.
Suddenly, Sorah, fresh out of the water, approached them. Her wet fur highlighted her curvy silhouette.
"What's the matter with you two? Come enjoy the water with us before Doren and I take care of lunch," the female said cheerfully.
Seeing her, Esteban stood up and, in an impulsive act, hugged her tightly.
"Esteban! I'm wet," Sorah laughed, but the human remained hugging her belly in silence. Sorah looked at Lilethe for an explanation, but the skunk only shook hys head, shrugging. After a moment, Sorah noticed Esteban sobbing. She quickly bent down and hugged him tenderly.
“What's wrong, honey? Are you feeling sick?”
“Mom, I… forgive me for all the pain I caused you. I am so sorry for the suffering you and Regthar went through because of me” said the engineer.
“Esteban, son... why do you say that? There is nothing to forgive” said Sorah sweetly.
“I look at you, Regthar and Hajo, and sometimes I feel like I've been an obstacle to the happiness of the three of you”
“Esteban! That's not true!” exclaimed the female renzar as she pressed him against her belly. After exchanging glances with Lilethe, Sorah brought her snout close to his ear and whispered:
“Listen. You and I need to talk. Tonight, I want you to sleep with me in the tent. Just you and me. We haven't been together for a while”
Esteban raised his head and looked at her in surprise. Sorah nodded with a smile, ruffling his hair.
"As you say, Mom," Esteban replied, comforted by the confidence she inspired in him.
Meanwhile, in the water, Regthar, Bluma and Doren continued to have fun and cool off. Hajo played with a light ball, lifting it above the surface of the lake with his telekinesis. Seeing his son's extraordinary skill, Regthar commented:
“Wow, I still don't understand how Hajo can do that. Doren, did you also breastfeed Hajo when he was born? Maybe that explains everything”
Upon hearing this, Bluma declared.
“Don't be ridiculous, Regthar. Those powers aren't acquired that way”
“Regt, although Hajo entertained himself by sucking on my nipples when he was a baby, I never gave him milk. And if that were the case, Mrs. Triny is right. Telekinesis is not something that is acquired by breastfeeding from a skunktaur from the Blue Paw House” said Doren as hy stretched hys body in the water.
“Hmmm… I'm really intrigued. Maybe it was something he ate” the renzar commented again. Bluma and Doren exchanged glances and burst out laughing. Then Regthar approached Hajo and took him in his arms.
“Son, you are a very enigmatic little person”
“Daaaaad! Ball Grrrr… Daaaaad!” the child stammered, waving his little hands, touching everyone's heart.
“Come on, climb onto my shoulders, that's it!” said Regthar as he placed Hajo on his back. The little boy happily held onto his father's neck as he began to walk towards the shore.
“I'm very proud of you, little one. You'll be a great Renzar” said Regthar with a smile in his heart.
“Daaaad! Daaaad!” repeated the child, happy to ride on his back.

Zeraya is an enigma in herself. Natany is a person who made a mistake - like anyone else - and she regrets what she did. And, in my opinion, Gerak is not so innocent in this matter. Gerak made the same mistake as Lilethe in the second book: he kept silent supposedly to protect the person he loves, but all he does is exasperate her more.
Well, Aldorah Krim was adjudicated in a court of law, and I suppose I was going along with the theme of forgiveness as she also had her sentence reduced due to her cooperating to turn in the rest of the Rakshani slavers. That's a pretty huge difference. And it was also because of her love for Ugkar that she was reformed; that was the interpretation I got from the arc in your story. (As you remember, I originally surmised Ugkar was going to kill Aldorah)
Long and short is, at least from the narrative, Aldorah put in the work to make amends for her misdeeds, and at least in terms of the Vika-B story she remains a Federation test subject for the rest of her days. Natany hasn't faced accountability yet for her actions while Aldorah did.

Well, the fact that Aldorah was tried and then convicted (and Natany was not) shows that Aldorah's misdeeds were worse. Also, it is not accurate that Natany is not facing responsibility for what she did. She was suspended from her police duties by her boss while a punishment is decided according to the offense. Here we call it "administrative summary." She will probably be punished once the investigation is over. Also, she recognized her mistake, and took full responsibility, and was remorseful. Aldorah, on the other hand, did not do so until much later. (If she had not fallen in love with Ugkar and hy with fallen in love with her, she probably would have died, that was her fate, yes I remember, heh)
I still believe in Natany.
I still believe in Natany.
Wow, I have to say, the heated interaction between Gerak and Zeraya feels so real, and so well-written, it almost feels like a real life conversation. The frustration, the malice, their emotions are just so well done, my friend 👍
Esteban said exactly what I felt, you know, as much as I wanted to honour Avik’s offer, I couldn’t, because I believe that you should never offer a gift to someone if it requires them to change, or even give up a certain aspect of their life, like their residence, friend circle, or the neighbourhood they live in, because people grow attachments to those things, and they have plans, and more often than not, they will be too considerate about your noble offer to reject it. In short, to some extent, you “force” them to accept it. You know, if I were Avik, I would just offer 5,000,000 credits to them or something like that, and let them decide what they’ll do with it, that way, my gift would seem more genuine and less “force-like”.

Thank you so much for your words! I really appreciate it. I try to make the dialogues natural and the events happen through them. Through the dialogue, we can see that Zeraya is not just any girl. She is a tough, strong and aggressive Rakshani, who has a background that has not yet been revealed and uncertain intentions. Even Gerak himself is seen as someone we do not fully know yet, despite being a character who has been in the stories for quite some time.
And yes, Avik compromises things a bit, forcing Sorah and Regthar to make momentous decisions. But as you say, maybe he should have offered something else, credits or a bigger property in Chakona. But I am sure that Regthar could not accept such gifts. He is a person used to fighting for what he wants and not receiving gifts. He values things obtained by his own efforts more, just as he values a victory in a Khudok fight against a difficult opponent. That is the Regthar papa bear! Heh.

Honestly it’s just so hard not to like Regthar more and more, he’s just a honourable person! I have respect for people like that, people who don’t choose the easy way out and prefer to find their own path in the maze of life, because at the end of the day, it’s the only way to think, to feel, and to worry, which ultimately is the only way to become strong, which I’m certain Regthar knows very well.
As for Zeraya…if that’s even her real name, hope I can find out more about her! I have a strong feeling that she’s not the only illegal person around here…but I have no evidence. One thing for sure, Gerak was not entirely honest when he told Lorna that it was his “sister” who he wanted to hide…no, that can’t just be the only thing. I re-read that chapter again, and his words feel shady; it’s like he chose them very carefully and avoid certain “words” and “details”. You know, maybe his story makes sense, but it just lacks a complete picture with so many missing details, like, what did his sister do? What is his involvement? Does he have the same criminal records? Gerak had left out all those details! Also, he never specifically said he was “innocent”, he just let Lorna and the rest of us to assume that he’s a good guy who simply wants to help his “sister”; that’s the picture Gerak wanted us to have.
All in all, it’s so exciting! And you’ve done a great job writing Gerak’s deception my friend ☺️
