Prompt: witness
The fire department had succeeded in putting out the fire, while also limiting the damage to just the restaurant. It hadn’t spread to the gun shop and styling salon on either side of the eatery. Thanks to fast action by the restaurant staff, the gas supply had been shut off, a move that had prevented making things much worse.
A short distance away, the restaurant staff and the diners had been gathered for treatment by EMTs, and detectives were starting to take people aside to ask what they had seen.
Detective Sanders approached a family of four, a terrier with his spaniel wife and their two pups. After introducing himself, the ram got their names and contact information before asking, “Are any of you hurt?”
The terrier shook his head and hugged his wife reassuringly. “No, thank God,” he said. “They said they weren’t interested in us.”
“’They?’ Can you describe them, please?” He jotted notes as the man replied, and asked, “Can you tell me what happened?”
The spaniel hugged her two children tighter as she said, “Th-they came in, w-waving guns . . . “
“Go on, please.”
The terrier stroked the spaniel’s curly headfur soothingly. “They came in,” he said, “kicked a few empty tables to clear a space, and forced the staff to empty the coolers in back.”
“Of what, Sir?” Sanders asked.
“All the meat,” the terrier said.
The spaniel kissed the top of one of her pups’ heads. “Th-they even took the m-meatballs off J-Jeffrey’s plate,” she said brokenly.
“They told us all to change the way we lived,” her husband said, “and then told us to get out while they started pouring gasoline on the pile of meat.” He took a breath and looked at the detective. “Get these guys, will you?”
“We’ll do our best, Sir,” Sanders said, and after making sure that they had nothing else to offer for the time being, he went to confer with the other detectives.
It was obvious that this was another incident by the vegan terror group, Balsamic Jihad.
