Lucca was kind enough to describe how this page in the comic moves the story forward. I like how they are both quite surprised to see each other.
I wonder if Twilight purposely did not tell Spike about Goldigony? Maybe she and/or Princess Celestia wanted Spike to have a more natural response to meeting a new dragon for the first time? Spike may have tried a bit too hard to be her friend if he knew that he was going to be sharing a dorm room with another dragon. Spike being all excited to make friends with Goldy may have not been the best way for him to initially meet her. So, with both being surprised, it allows both Spike and Goldy to feel a bit awkward and go through the natural steps that go into making some creature your friend?
I know there will be a lot of questions answered in forthcoming pages of the comic, but I do like to talk out the possibilities as you share each new page. :)
