Commission for
firedragon12 featuring the main duo from the Talon animated pilot!
I like the idea of dinosaurs not understanding the concept of diapers, so they see them as like weird additions or accessories which they have no idea why they're being put in. I guess Talon and Kota don't seem to mind, in fact they probably love the fact that they are themed towards their elements! Maybe this is some sort of special wearable armor like some dinos have, that's meant just for the champions!
(And totally not after several failed attempts to explain the concept of housebreaking to two kids who probably don't get the concept of not going potty in the champion's cave)
I did watch the pilot, and I have rather mixed feelings about it...
Although firstly, I'll say this: the artwork and character designs look AMAZING, they take heavy inspiration from Land Before time, but use more recent, realistic depictions of the dinosaurs. and LBT's style still looks great, even if the depiction of their dinos are outdated or inaccurate. Although I much prefer Talon's design before she became champion, I think the more natural colors, and blue hair she once had look more appealing than the brighter rainbow ones. Kota also looks great, I'm a huge Sauropod fan, plus he looks like Shorty, one of my favorite sauropods behind Littlefoot, so A+ from me.
My main concern is that certain characters might not be super animation friendly, as the whole thing seems to be animated on 2s and sometimes dropping to 3s, it can be a little stiff at times. Almost as if I can feel the animators struggling at points, and I know EXACTLY how that feels, you have this grand vision of what you want in your mind, but when you actually try to animate it, it's like; "oh god... how long is this going to take?" so you start cutting a few corners just to make do and just get it done, and the end result, while still good, does deviate a little from that ideal vision. so the idea to cut shading except for in certain scenes is a good idea. But if the animators can handle it, and are willing to go with these designs, then I say all the best to them.
I guess the main issue a lot of people have is the pacing, the pilot wants to introduce a lot of ideas, but doesn't really give the viewer a lot of time to take most of it in, like they're speeding through a checklist of essential plot points, and had to remove a few much needed private/personal moments for it's characters to do so, it needs a bit more time to bake at points, let the audience take in what just happened, especially if it's an emotional scene.
I mentioned this to my friend when we both watched the pilot together, and that it felt a lot like a two or three part episode hastily shortened into one.
But I do see potential in this series, like I said, it might be speeding through a lot of what it wants to introduce, but it is still just the pilot, maybe for the main series, add in some much needed downtime and maybe make it a two part episode, and I think you've got a potentially incredible show in the works! Like, I can already see those great moments leading up to those story beats the creators intend to show off, so keep it up!
