“…And to think, all it took to have this Net-bound ‘runner in your corner was to have the equivalent of a solid-state drive chipped to your nervous system. Risky procedure? Sure. But you knew the risks; understood how far these AI had come since they were uploaded. The fact that this one chose the Avatar he currently wandered The Net with — this two-legged being, highly reminiscent of a species of the Vulpine family; clad with old-world culture that he felt suited him best; unique markings resembling tattoos that didn’t bear any current-day Corpo insignias that you were aware of; even observed human behaviors enough to stylize an outfit for himself — As if anybody besides you would ever see him. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think Biotechnica and Militech had collaboratively found a way to stuff some poor gonk in a glorified data shard, ship him out to be integrated into some gullible soldiers’ hi-tech equipment, only to eventually be discarded as an expendable blend of outdated hardware and software; a byproduct of a corporate experiment that ultimately failed - dropped and soon forgotten.
