A sketch-up remake of my previous SS United States piece. This piece was completed parallel to my reading of Steven Ujifusa's excellent book on the SS US, "A Man and His Ship". After learning she was going to be sunk, I decided I had to do something to commemorate not only one of my favorite merchant marine vessels of all time (NS Savannah drawing when?), but also one of the first scene drawings I was happy with upon completion.
This revised version features naturally the stylistic improvements brought on by over 2 years of additional experience, together with changes to the lifeboat gantries to make them more accurate, and the inclusion of some of my friends, among them
bladelupus,
agenericthing, Fieldpup, and that one fox from TriStar who I don't think has a public social media presence.
While still not entirely the large, lively scene I had initially thought of when I had first begun work on this concept so long ago, this now-pair of art pieces remain one of my favorites. Here I tried to go for a look similar to the classic Kodachrome exposures of color photography past, and even if I didn't get everything quite perfect, I'm happy with how it turned out.
And now we prepare to say a last farewell to the SS United States, Queen of the Seas, last holder of the Blue Riband, taken from us far too soon.
A blue snow leopard with teal spots and pink accents, dressed in a fedora and tie, stands in front of a moored SS United States, partially lit before an orange sky. A faint cloud of fog and steam wafts from the funnels and shrouds the rear part of the hull. A duck toller retriever, winged wolf, and red fox in a hard hat holding an OSHA safety manual watch from the rails as an Australian shepherd is lifted up to deck level by one of the ship's fore baggage cranes.
Made with a mouse in GIMP 3.0 starting from June 2025, on a sketch originally dating from December 2021. Completed November 2nd, 2025.
